In an innovative approach to manufacturing and product development, Conway Electric briefly capitalized on what are typically considered quality control (QC) rejects to create the Jax Raw variant of their task lamp. This version intentionally embraces the aesthetic of raw, unfinished materials, giving it a distinctive, boutique hotel-like appearance. The design specifications for the Jax Raw highlight its unique material treatment: The cast aluminum casing is left unpolished and untreated, retaining its natural uneven and imperfect texture directly from the mold. Raw brass inserts are used as they come off the lathe, without further treatment. The steel tube is sandblasted and left uncoated, allowing a rust patina to develop naturally over time. Similarly, the cover plate is stamped and sandblasted. Both the steel tube and the cover plate were originally QC finish rejects, where the finish had been burned off, then sandblasted, and subsequently left untreated and uncoated. The stainless spun shade is also used directly as it emerges from the mold, preserving its unrefined state. This strategy allowed the company to transform manufacturing imperfections into a desirable design feature, catering to a market segment that appreciates industrial and raw aesthetics. While the Jax Raw variant is no longer available, its production demonstrated a unique perspective on material utilization and design, contrasting with the more refined Jax Fade. Yeelight has released an updated LED strip, the Yeelight LED Lightstrip 1S, which now features native HomeKit support through a standard HomeKit QR Code.
