Geek Review: Dyson Lightcycle Morph Task Light
The Dyson Lightcycle Morph is a task light that integrates advanced technology to provide adaptive illumination. It utilizes machine learning, in-built light and motion sensors, and a GPS-driven algorithm to automatically adjust brightness and warmth based on the user's location and time of day. This functionality is enabled through synchronization with the Dyson Link app on a smartphone. Upon entering a room, the Lightcycle Morph activates and transitions its light temperature to match the natural day-night cycle, further fine-tuning settings according to the user's age and local environmental conditions.
Despite its compact light source and unique design, the Lightcycle Morph delivers powerful illumination. An improvement over its 2019 predecessor, the original Lightcycle, this model features a new rotational arm that extends for greater reach and can rotate 360 degrees vertically. This allows the light to be bounced off surfaces or directed upwards, capabilities not typically found in conventional task lights. A standout feature is its 'morphing' ability, where the entire arm retracts into a perforated stand, held by a magnet, transforming it into an ambient mood lamp. This offers a subtle light ideal for winding down or watching movies.
Maintaining Dyson's signature minimalist and futuristic aesthetic, the Lightcycle Morph showcases a matte metallic silver arm and stand contrasted with a glossy white lightbulb cover and base. Standing at 523mm (20.6 inches), it is a tall desk lamp that includes a USB-C port on its stand for slow device charging. Assembly is straightforward, involving two main parts (arm and stand, and base) and a power brick. Visual instructions are conveniently printed inside the box lid, and a QR code facilitates Dyson Link app installation. While manual controls for power, brightness, and warmth are present on the lightbulb section, they are noted to be less responsive than the app-based controls, which offer a smoother user experience.
The arm and stand are robust, with well-engineered axes and pulley-like attachments ensuring smooth swiveling motions. The extended reach of the Lightcycle Morph's arm is a significant advantage over the previous model, enhancing its versatility for various tasks by allowing light to be directed across larger areas or bounced off walls. However, unlike the original Lightcycle, this model cannot be physically moved downwards for precision tasks such as drawing or miniature painting. This necessitates maximizing brightness to compensate, which may not fully replicate the precision of closer proximity lighting.
Ultimately, the Dyson Lightcycle Morph serves as a versatile variant rather than a direct replacement for the original Lightcycle. Both models offer 1,000 lux brightness, but their utility differs; the Morph is considered a generalist due to its adaptability and wider range of light direction, while the original is more specialized for precision work. Priced at S$799 (S$1,199 for the Floor variant), the Lightcycle Morph offers substantial utility and is presented as a compelling option for those seeking a sophisticated and adaptable desk lighting solution.
