Current Task Light Takes Charge of Recharging All of Your Devices
Jones & Partners, a UK-based industrial design studio, has developed an award-winning task lighting and charging concept named Current. The design addresses the need for functional yet aesthetically pleasing solutions for charging multiple devices in both commercial and residential environments. The studio, known for its "unfussy yet functional" approach and integration of multitasking elements, drew upon its experience in contract furniture and electronic design to create this modular task lamp.
The Current task light offers a comprehensive solution for workspaces, incorporating illumination, stationery storage, and charging capabilities for various devices. It features both wireless and USB port charging options, alongside the potential for additional power outlets, all integrated into a single, clutter-free form factor. This design originated from internal research that identified a gap in the market for well-designed solutions for individuals working communally at large tables or desks, where multiple power needs often lead to tangled wires and disorganized spaces.
Two primary versions of the Current task light have been developed. The first is a minimalist task lamp that includes a seamlessly integrated wireless charging surface on the left side of its base, positioned conveniently near the on/off switch. This version offers a clean and straightforward charging option for compatible devices.
The second version of the Current task light features a more integrated design, with a portion of the lamp's base designed to be concealed beneath the tabletop. This surface-mounted design accommodates a larger plug-in unit, which allows for the addition and interchangeability of two charging modules. This modularity provides users with flexibility to customize their power access based on specific needs.
Designed with a slender, "I-shaped" base and an LED shade, the Current task light occupies minimal physical and visual space, effectively serving as an antidote to workspace clutter. When installed in multiple units, the lights provide a focused illumination that is reminiscent of traditional academic library lamps but updated with a contemporary aesthetic and modern technological features. The configurable task light, while currently a concept design, has already received recognition, earning a Red Dot Award in 2023 for its innovative design, suggesting a strong likelihood of its eventual market availability.
