How To Clean Vinyl Plank Flooring Like a Pro

This comprehensive guide offers expert advice on effectively cleaning vinyl plank flooring to ensure its longevity and maintain its appearance. The article emphasizes the importance of proper cleaning techniques to prevent damage such as scratches, stains, and discoloration. It begins by highlighting the durability and ease of maintenance of luxury vinyl plank (LVP) flooring, drawing from the author's personal experience in a bustling dog shop where LVP successfully withstood enthusiastic claws and frequent spills for a decade. The cleaning process is broken down into several sequential steps, starting with sweeping or vacuuming the flooring. It is crucial to remove dirt and debris before mopping, as gritty particles can act like sandpaper, abrading the surface over time and increasing susceptibility to stains and moisture damage. Jenne Ross, Director of Product for Karndean, recommends using a dry microfiber broom mop, and for vacuuming, selecting a bare floor setting to avoid damaging the surface with a beater bar. Next, the article addresses the preparation of cleaning solutions. It advises following the flooring manufacturer's instructions and using recommended products. Ross specifically suggests Karndean Clean or a mixture of white cleaning vinegar (maximum ¼ cup) with one gallon of warm water for Karndean flooring. Ron Baker, Senior Technical Manager at Gerflor USA, recommends commercial-grade pH-neutral cleaners, stressing that pH levels should be between 7 and 11. Cleaners with a pH below 7 are acidic and harmful to resilient flooring, while those above 11 are too alkaline and can also cause long-term damage. Before applying any cleaning solution to the entire floor, a critical step is to test it on an inconspicuous area. This ensures that the product does not cause discoloration and is suitable for the specific flooring. The solution should be allowed to dry completely before making a final assessment. For mopping, the guide recommends using a microfiber mop or an O-Cedar spin wet mop. Products like Swiffer spray mops and wet pads are discouraged due to their tendency to leave sticky residues and their less eco-friendly nature. Proper wringing of the mop head is essential; it should be damp but not dripping to prevent excessive moisture from damaging the floor. Ross also advises changing mop water frequently to avoid spreading gritty particles or dirty smears. Baker adds that allowing the cleaner sufficient dwell time (a few minutes) can be beneficial for breaking down ingrained dirt. Finally, the article provides tips for removing stubborn scuffs. Ross suggests using Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, but Baker cautions that it might damage some vinyl plank surfaces, reiterating the importance of prior testing. For deeper cleaning, Baker recommends an autoscrubber or swing buffer with a 3M Red pad, or a 3M 5300 Blue pad for significant dirt buildup. For tight spaces, a doodlebug handheld scrubber with a 3M Red pad can be used. He warns against using pads more aggressive than a 3M 5300, as they can abrade the factory-applied surface coating. The article concludes with a FAQ section, advising against abrasive or bleach-based cleaners, as well as floor polishes and waxes, which can make floors slippery and compromise the surface seal. To prevent floors from getting dirty, Baker suggests using vinyl-backed walk-off mats to trap dirt. He also warns against rubber products, such as furniture protectors or rubber-backed mats, as they can cause permanent yellowish stains on vinyl flooring. #VinylPlankFlooring #FloorCleaning #HomeMaintenance #DIYCleaning #LuxuryVinylPlank #HouseholdTips #FlooringCare #HomeImprovement #VinylPlankFlooring #FloorCleaning #HomeMaintenance #DIYCleaning #LuxuryVinylPlank #HouseholdTips #FlooringCare #HomeImprovement
