SwitchBot Curtain 3 Review: Stronger, quieter, and more versatile
The SwitchBot Curtain 3 bot represents a significant refinement in the company's line of smart curtain control devices, designed to automate the opening and closing of curtains. This device aims to offer enhanced functionality, improved strength, and reduced noise compared to its predecessors. The core mechanism involves two spring-loaded arms that securely grip a curtain rod or rail. A motor-driven wheel then propels the bot along, pushing or pulling the curtains as it moves. The design accommodates the spacing between curtain rungs or loops, allowing for smooth operation.
Installation of the SwitchBot Curtain 3 is straightforward. While the device is slightly longer than the previous model, its aesthetic is generally discreet, intended to be hidden between the curtain fabric and the wall. The device is compatible with three distinct types of curtain rails, requiring users to select the appropriate version for their specific setup. For curtain rods, the installation process is simplified, involving placing the bot on the rod and attaching included loop clips for enhanced versatility, allowing the bot to work with various curtain loop materials. The SwitchBot app provides detailed written and video instructions, making the setup process quick and user-friendly, typically taking only a few minutes. Calibration is the final step before the device is ready for use.
An optional accessory is the newly revised Solar Panel 3, which connects via USB-C and a plastic clasp. This solar panel is an improvement over the previous model and is designed to continuously power the Curtain 3, eliminating the need for manual recharging. Its adjustable hinge allows for optimal positioning to capture direct sunlight, ensuring consistent power supply, despite its somewhat unconventional appearance when attached.
The SwitchBot app is central to controlling and automating the Curtain 3. Its updated interface offers simplified controls, allowing users to precisely open or close curtains to specific degrees. The app supports delayed actions, scheduling, and other automation features, providing comprehensive control over curtain movements. Integration with smart home ecosystems is a key advantage; by connecting the Curtain 3 to a SwitchBot Hub, users can access Google Assistant. With recent Matter integration, the Curtain 3 is fully accessible within Google Assistant, enabling voice commands and seamless control akin to managing smart lights. For users who prefer not to use an app, a "Touch and go" feature allows for manual activation by lightly pushing the bots.
Performance enhancements include a more powerful motor, capable of moving up to 36 pounds, while simultaneously operating more quietly than the previous generation, particularly in "QuietDrift" mode. This mode, ideal for scheduled actions, allows the bots to move at a slower speed, reducing noise levels to under 25 decibels, suitable for applications like waking up to a quiet sunrise. The expanded compatibility with different curtain types significantly broadens the device's appeal, making it a versatile smart home addition. The SwitchBot Curtain 3 offers a reliable and self-sufficient layer of home automation, blending ease of use with effective performance.
