ZemiSmart Zigbee Curtain Driver (review)

This review evaluates the ZemiSmart Zigbee Curtain Driver, a retrofit smart home device designed to automate existing curtains. The product integrates with Apple HomeKit through the ZemiSmart Zigbee hub, expanding ZemiSmart’s HomeKit-compatible offerings. The curtain driver functions by gripping onto a curtain rail or rod, with a motorized wheel that moves along the track, pulling the curtain. For installations with a pair of curtains, two motors are required, one for each curtain. The review acknowledges that the product’s packaging is basic, providing minimal information on its contents and application, though this may contribute to lower costs and environmental benefits. The ZemiSmart Zigbee Curtain Driver measures 205mm tall, 40mm wide, and 37mm deep. It features three control buttons on the front (open, closed, and stop/pause) and includes holsters on its sides for arms that connect to the curtain rail or rod. The underside of the motor houses a recessed reset button, a micro USB port for charging its internal battery, and a small on/off switch. A rubber-tread wheel on the top facilitates movement along the track. The package includes an English manual and two USB cables, one of which can serve as an extender. Depending on the chosen package, a basic RF433Mhz remote control unit may be included. This remote features eight buttons, with three for basic open, closed, and stop/pause functions, and three for preset open positions (80%, 50%, and 20%). The remote directly communicates with the motor and comes with AAA batteries and a wall-mountable holder. A solar panel with a USB cable is also provided, though its attachment to the motor is noted as unclear, with stickers as the suggested method. Alternatively, the solar panel can be mounted to a window with the included extended USB cable. The kit provides four pairs of arms for different curtain systems: one pair for curtain rods, one for I-rail tracks, and two pairs of different sizes for U-rail tracks. Installation involves securely positioning the motor on the rod or rail, ensuring the rubber wheel maintains tight contact for optimal grip. The spring-loaded holsters for the arms assist in achieving this tight fit. The review notes that the mechanical nature of the retrofit solution, while functional, might feel less sophisticated compared to integrated systems. Integration with smart home ecosystems is managed via the ZemiSmart Zigbee hub. Once paired with the hub, the curtain driver appears in the Apple Home app as a single tile, allowing for control via a slider to set the curtain's opening percentage. While basic in the Home app, lacking features like battery level indication, more detailed control and settings, including battery levels and open/closed limits, are available in the Tuya SmartLife app. The Tuya app also enables setting the motor's direction and configuring or resetting limits. Beyond HomeKit, the device supports various platforms and voice assistants such as Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, SmartThings, Xiaodu, Xiaowei, DingDong, Tmall Genie, Yandex, and IFTTT. The Tuya app offers advanced automation options, including triggers based on location, device status, and weather conditions like temperature, humidity, and sunrise/sunset times. During testing, the curtain driver operated without issues, performing routine open and close tasks for seven days without getting stuck. The motor's sound level averaged around 35dB, which was quieter than anticipated. The estimated battery life of five months between charges is considered plausible, though actual performance may vary based on curtain weight and drop length. Despite some reservations about the mechanical design, the ZemiSmart Zigbee Curtain Driver is regarded as a decent product, particularly for users not heavily invested in a single smart home brand, offering a region-free and compelling option for curtain automation. #ZemiSmart #Zigbee #CurtainDriver #SmartHome #HomeKitIntegration #SmartCurtains #ProductReview #HomeAutomation #ZemiSmart #Zigbee #CurtainDriver #SmartHome #HomeKitIntegration #SmartCurtains #ProductReview #HomeAutomation
