ThirdReality Smart Blinds review: DIY motorized Zigbee shades
ThirdReality Smart Blinds offer an inexpensive alternative to custom-made smart window shades, which can typically cost $500 or more per window, excluding professional installation. These blinds are designed as room-darkening cellular shades, featuring an outer fabric layer and an aluminum foil lining for insulation. They are available in widths ranging from 20 to 39 inches, in one-inch increments, and have a fixed maximum length of 72 inches. The only color option available is an innocuous beige. While these shades provide excellent light blocking and insulation, they lack light-filtering options and aesthetic versatility.
The blinds are powered by four AA batteries, with two additional AA batteries for the infrared remote control. All electronic components are integrated into the bottom rail of the shade. This design allows for easier battery changes without needing a stepstool, but it can hinder remote control functionality if the shade is lowered behind furniture. The bottom rail also incorporates a mechanical limiter to prevent the shade from lowering past the windowsill, although it won't detect obstructions elsewhere.
Installation can be done with either an inside or outside mount, and the necessary hardware is included. The physical installation is straightforward but requires precise measurements. A notable limitation encountered during testing was the restricted range of available widths. For instance, a 42-inch wide window required two separate blinds (a 20-inch and a 21-inch), resulting in visible gaps on the sides and in the middle. Furthermore, the blinds did not hang perfectly straight, with a slight droop on the left side, and one blind did not sit flush with the windowsill when fully closed, creating a half-inch gap on the right. These aesthetic imperfections may not meet the expectations of all buyers, despite the budget-friendly price point.
Each ThirdReality Smart Blind comes with an interchangeable infrared remote control, which can operate any blind it's pointed at. This can lead to some operational challenges, especially with multiple blinds in close proximity, as controlling individual blinds without affecting others may require trial and error. The blinds utilize Zigbee connectivity, offering broad compatibility with various smart home systems. While ThirdReality offers a proprietary $30 smart hub for app control, the blinds can directly connect to several popular Zigbee-enabled devices. These include specific Amazon Echo speakers (4th Generation, Echo Plus, Echo Show 10—excluding the first gen—and Echo Studio), Amazon’s Eero 6 and Eero Pro mesh Wi-Fi routers, and smart home hubs like Ezlo Plus, Hubitat, and Samsung SmartThings. During testing, integration with Alexa allowed for seamless voice and app control.
ThirdReality Smart Blinds are available for purchase directly from the manufacturer or through Amazon, with prices ranging from $139.99 for a 20-inch width to $158.99 for a 39-inch width, plus shipping. While other budget-priced motorized shades exist, they often lack smart features. Conversely, these alternatives might offer more color and size options. Consumers are advised to weigh their priorities between smart features, aesthetic choices, and cost when considering ThirdReality Smart Blinds.
