Husband-and-wife design duo Scott Jarrell and Kristan Cunningham of Hammer and Spear were tasked with the renovation. Having worked with Caruso on previous projects, the designers were given significant creative freedom after an initial concept presentation. Caruso's primary design inspiration was the Esalen Institute in Big Sur, interpreted through the lens of the 'Mad Men' series finale, which depicted a tranquil California retreat. While initial ideas for tapestries and tie-dye were toned down, the designers incorporated an "overdose of saturated color" to compensate and root the home in the region's artistic culture. The guiding touchstone for the design became the warm, woody California abode of sculptor J.B. Blunk, known for his Japanese-inspired aesthetic.
