A Fierce Makeover for a Beacon Hill Powder Room
Lauren Caron, founder and principal of Studio Laloc, undertook a significant DIY renovation of her Beacon Hill Craftsman home in Seattle, specifically focusing on a powder room. Caron moved to Seattle in 2016 after establishing her design firm, Studio Laloc, following a career creating installations at Bergdorf Goodman. She found settling in Seattle challenging until she purchased the 1916 Beacon Hill Craftsman, which offered a sense of familiarity with its original moldings, woodwork, and high ceilings, reminiscent of East Coast architecture. The home provided an opportunity for Caron to implement design ideas that her clients had previously hesitated to embrace.
Faced with a budget, Caron leveraged her husband Jack's carpentry skills and her own background in illustration, visual merchandising, and exhibition design for various aspects of the renovation, including window treatments, painting, and finishing. The renovation began in the summer of 2019, with Jack removing vinyl flooring and pebbledash plaster from the half-bath, which was originally part of the back porch. The room remained gutted for a year while the couple focused on remodeling the adjacent scullery, allowing Caron ample time to meticulously plan the powder room's design.
The main house interiors draw inspiration from the Arts and Crafts movement, but Caron envisioned the powder room as a distinct, dramatic space. She aimed for a "moody and fun and almost sexy" aesthetic, designed to capture attention. The powder room is accessed through a hidden jib door, adding an element of surprise and drama. The walls are adorned with a graphic Gucci print from 2016 featuring yellow-eyed tigers, chosen for its timeless appeal rather than current trends. A print of coiling serpents complements the carefully selected accessories and finishes, which are intended to age gracefully. Caron emphasized the importance of engaging guests with unique artwork in a powder room setting.
The centerpiece of the room is a bowfront mahogany vanity, its dark top contrasting with walls painted in Farrow and Ball's Inchyra Blue, a shade that appears almost charcoal in certain lighting. To integrate the bold wallpaper with the home's existing architecture, Caron incorporated elements like beadboard paneling, brass accents, and an ogee-detailed edge on the vanity's soapstone counter. She noted that personal projects allow designers to challenge their own creative boundaries and be decisive in their choices. Practical advice shared includes ordering samples before making large online purchases, buying more product than initially estimated to account for imperfections or stock issues, and using dark crayons to line wallpaper edges or tinting primer black for dark paint to improve coverage and conceal seams.
