Baby boomers: Bathroom updates that increase livability

Baby boomers are making strategic home updates, particularly in bathrooms, to enhance livability, safety, and long-term home value. Recognizing the importance of aging in place, this demographic is proactively addressing potential future needs, focusing on the bathroom due to its frequent use and inherent hazards. Jim Quinn, installation manager for Premier Care in Bathing, emphasizes that these updates allow baby boomers to enjoy their golden years fully and safely within their homes. He provides key recommendations for bathroom renovations that prioritize health, comfort, and safety. One crucial aspect is flooring. Traditional cold, slick surfaces like hardwood or ceramic tiles present significant slipping risks. Replacing these with safer alternatives such as carpeting or textured vinyl can mitigate hazards. Carpeting offers warmth and eliminates slipping and tripping concerns associated with rugs or hard surfaces. Textured vinyl provides slip resistance. To further enhance comfort and add a touch of luxury, radiant heating can be installed underneath the chosen flooring. Another significant update is the installation of a walk-in bath. While water and heat therapy are beneficial for age-related conditions like arthritis, traditional bathtubs can be difficult and dangerous to access for older individuals. Walk-in tubs offer a practical and safe solution. Premier Care in Bathing's walk-in tubs, which have received the Arthritis Foundation's Ease-Of-Use Commendation, feature low-level entry, slip-resistant seats, backrests, and temperature-controlled hot water, often including Hydrovescent therapy. These models, like the popular Sanctuary, are designed to fit into standard bathtub spaces, making them a convenient and wise investment for long-term home occupancy. Updating dated hardware is a simple yet impactful renovation. Small, intricate drawer handles and knobs can be challenging for those with limited dexterity. Replacing these with larger, easy-to-grip options not only modernizes the bathroom's aesthetic but also improves functionality for people of all ages. During this update, it is also recommended to install grab bars in critical areas such as near the toilet and inside the shower for added safety and support. Finally, lighting plays a dual role in bathroom design, affecting both style and safety. As eyes age, quality illumination becomes increasingly important. Therefore, incorporating both task lighting for specific activities and ambient lighting for overall visibility is essential during bathroom renovations. Many baby boomers opt for dimmers, allowing them to adjust lighting levels. This flexibility means full brightness can be used for showering or getting ready, while softer, dimmed lighting can provide easy navigation at night or create a relaxing atmosphere during a long soak in a walk-in tub. Quinn concludes that these types of thoughtful updates are not just about comfort and safety but are also wise investments that can increase a home's overall value and provide homeowners with peace of mind for the future. #BabyBoomers #BathroomUpdates #AgingInPlace #HomeSafety #WalkInBaths #AccessibleDesign #HomeValue #InteriorDesign #SeniorLiving #BabyBoomers #BathroomUpdates #AgingInPlace #HomeSafety #WalkInBaths #AccessibleDesign #HomeValue #InteriorDesign #SeniorLiving
