A couple gives their bathroom a spa-like makeover with grey tiles and walk-in shower
Emily and Mark transformed their small, outdated bathroom into a spacious, spa-like sanctuary by knocking down a dividing wall. The renovation, completed in 2021, involved a full overhaul of their 2017 house purchase. They meticulously planned the layout to incorporate a large walk-in shower and a separate bath, a crucial design element for them. To optimize space, they opted for a wall-hung toilet, creating a more open feel in the room.
Their design inspiration came from extensive online research into grey bathroom ideas, leading them to choose a dark, moody aesthetic complemented by strategic lighting. Budget constraints for tiles were overcome by sourcing dark grey floor and wall tiles from Tile Mountain UK for approximately £550. For a contrasting feature, they selected light grey herringbone tiles from Topps Tiles for the shower wall and built-in alcoves. Mark, a joiner, undertook the challenging tiling work himself, significantly reducing labor costs.
Innovative lighting was a key component of their design, with strips of mood lighting from Amazon integrated into a ceiling alcove. Mark creatively clad this alcove with thin oak wood lengths from a local timber merchant, adding a unique and stylish touch. To balance the dark tiles, they installed bright LED spotlights and painted the ceiling white. The couple also chose white fixtures for the bath, sink, and toilet, and a concrete-effect worktop, which were all purchased at affordable prices from Amazon.
Addressing privacy and natural light, they replaced the original large windows with a long, thin window. Although this enhanced privacy and freed up space, it reduced natural light. To counteract this, Mark utilized a salvaged piece of toughened glass from his garage to create a partition between the shower and the bath, allowing more light to penetrate the area. This clever solution avoided the need for a full-height tiled wall, maintaining an open and airy feel.
Ultimately, Emily and Mark completed the entire bathroom renovation for around £3,800, well under their £4,500 budget. Their success was attributed to Mark's DIY labor and their diligent search for cost-effective materials online. The final design, featuring large floor and wall tiles, striking lighting, and clever space utilization, successfully created a beautiful, calming, and spa-like bathroom.
