How the Back of a Couch Became a Defining Feature in This Open Plan Room, and Created a Cozy Dining Space
This article explores how a thoughtfully designed open-plan living and dining space in a New England lakeside home achieved a balance between openness and coziness, despite its generous size. The homeowners, who frequently host guests, wanted the rooms to feel welcoming and intimate. Designer Heidi Lachapelle, from Heidi Lachapelle Interiors, addressed this challenge by implementing a creative layout that used furniture to define distinct zones within the large space.
The core of this design strategy involved separating the living area into two primary zones: one for television viewing and another for games and entertaining. A large, comfortable sectional was placed to facilitate movie watching and relaxation, while a more upright blue checked sofa was positioned for conversation and socializing. This intentional placement of seating created a snug, intimate atmosphere in one part of the room, reminiscent of a keeping room, contrasting with the more formal secondary seating area.
A key element in defining these spaces was the strategic placement of a specific couch. By rotating it so its back faced a designated dining nook, the couch effectively created a visual and functional separation between the living and dining areas without resorting to physical dividers. This simple adjustment transformed the boldly patterned couch, upholstered in Schumacher's Camden Cotton Check Fabric in Indigo, into a prominent feature that helped delineate the different zones.
The design incorporated a harmonious color palette, with the blue tones of the couch echoed in various upholstery elements throughout the room, including the dining seating. Natural materials were also woven into the design, particularly evident in the main dining area. This area was anchored by two large China cabinets, providing a sense of groundedness, and featured classic Senate Dining Chairs from Sawkille Co., accessorized with custom cushions in Rose Tarlow's Dorset Ink linen fabric and Karun Thakar's Jasmine and Frangipani fabric, further integrating the room's color scheme.
Antiques sourced from local shops were strategically placed to add character and provide a grounding balance against the newer furniture pieces, enhancing the layered and inviting aesthetic. The walls were painted in Benjamin Moore's White Dove, a warm and timeless neutral, complemented by contrasting trim in Farrow & Ball's String, a butter yellow that added a bolder neutral touch. Sisal rugs were introduced in both living areas to unify the spaces and bring in a natural texture.
This project serves as an example of successful open-plan design, demonstrating how careful furniture arrangement and thoughtful selection of materials and colors can create distinct, cozy zones within a large, expansive area. The design effectively blends elements of cozy interiors with modern open-format living, resulting in a space that is both functional for hosting and comforting for family life.
