Ten dining rooms where built-in seating provides extra space around the table
This lookbook explores ten examples of dining rooms and kitchens where built-in seating, such as benches or banquettes, is effectively used to maximize space and provide additional seating. This design approach is particularly beneficial in smaller homes or layouts where a central dining table is not feasible, allowing for more seats than traditional dining chairs alone. Beyond space-saving, built-in seating can also cleverly integrate storage solutions with concealed compartments under the seats.
The most common configuration involves a fixed seat along one side of the table, complemented by dining chairs on the opposing side. However, L-shaped or curved installations are also explored, demonstrating adaptability to various room layouts. A critical design consideration for successful built-in seating is ensuring adequate space for table legs to avoid obstructing diners and to allow for easy entry and exit.
The featured examples showcase diverse applications of this design principle. Timmins + Whyte's 10 Fold House in Australia incorporates an L-shaped bench with peach-toned cushions, matching an oak table and concealing storage. Spruce House by Ao-ft in the UK utilizes a polished concrete bench as an extension of the floor in a slightly sunken living space, creating an ideal seating height.
In Brussels, Hé!'s Karper project, a warehouse conversion, features a custom-made bench paired with a squashed-circle table, offering a round-table feel while adhering to the fixed seating. Bureau de Change's Frame House in London integrates a stepped terrazzo floor into its design, where one tier functions as a dining bench. Neiheiser Argyros's Steele's Road House, also in the UK, leverages a kitchen window bay to create a curved banquette around a fixed cafe-style round table.
Raúl Sanchez Architects' Girona Street Apartment in Spain uses color-blocking, with a deep blue bench and wall emphasizing the dining area. Architecture Architecture's Sunday project in Australia positions an upholstered banquette with a cantilevered seat against a kitchen island, complementing a slender table. Laney LA's Scalloped Concrete House in the USA features a bench seat built into a recess within a wooden kitchen island.
O'Sullivan Skoufoglou Architects' Kensington Place in London employs a plywood built-in bench with integrated storage to fit a dining table into a narrow space. Finally, Angelucci Architects' Nido House in Australia features an L-shaped green leather banquette and a marble-topped dining table with a tiled base, wrapping around a glazed courtyard. These examples collectively illustrate the versatility and practical benefits of built-in seating in contemporary home design.
