8-year-old girl's room gets the cutest reading nook — see the final result!
This article details how interior designer Cate Holcombe transformed her 8-year-old daughter's bedroom into a cozy and functional reading nook. The primary motivation for this project was the daughter's love for reading, which prompted Holcombe to create a dedicated space where she could comfortably engage with books. The room featured a sloped ceiling, which Holcombe ingeniously utilized to integrate a tent-like design for the reading nook.
The initial step in creating the reading nook involved selecting appropriate fabrics. Holcombe chose a linen floral pattern for the interior of the tent, purchasing 23 yards for this purpose. For the exterior walls of the tent, she opted for 10 yards of a solid fabric that complemented the floral design. Holcombe also shared a practical tip for budget-conscious decorators, suggesting that local fabric stores might offer discontinued or overstock materials at reduced prices, often less than $10 per yard. The outer walls of the fabric tent were secured by stapling them to a wood strip, which was then attached to the ceiling, providing a sturdy yet adaptable structure.
A significant challenge encountered during the project was seamlessly joining the fabric pieces to create a cohesive appearance. Holcombe, acknowledging her lack of professional seamstress skills, noted that the corners and edges of the fabric did not perfectly align. To conceal these imperfections and add an aesthetic touch, she fashioned a scalloped trim piece, which was affixed along the top edge of the tent. This detail not only disguised any sewing irregularities but also contributed to the overall charm of the nook.
Once the structural elements of the tent were established, the focus shifted to decorating the interior to foster an ideal reading environment. Holcombe incorporated wooden bookshelves to store her daughter's collection of books, a comfortable armchair for relaxation, and a plug-in tassel sconce to provide adequate lighting. Additional elements, such as a pink rug and numerous fluffy pillows, were included to enhance the comfort and inviting atmosphere of the space. The result was a personalized and snug retreat, which proved highly popular with her daughter, offering a private sanctuary for reading and play, especially away from her younger sister.
