This Incredible Dad Built His Daughter an Enchanted Tree Reading Nook
Rob Adams, a video game artist from Bellevue, Washington, embarked on an ambitious project to fulfill his six-year-old daughter Lia's wish for a "fairy tree" in her bedroom. Drawing inspiration from Disney set designs, Adams transformed a plain room into a whimsical wonderland, a feat that required approximately 350 hours of work over an 18-month period and an investment of $4,250 in materials.
The process began with Adams creating a detailed sketch and a 1:12 scale model of the tree using Sculpey modeling clay and plywood, carefully replicating the room's dimensions including the window and ceiling beams. He then baked the model to hardness and transferred its silhouettes onto the bedroom wall to guide the installation of the structural elements. Utilizing 3/8-inch rebar and 1/8-inch steel rods purchased from Home Depot, along with existing scrap materials, Adams meticulously welded the tree's frame. He ensured the structure was robust enough to support three adults, despite being designed for children.
Following the structural work, expanded metal lath was applied to the branches. Adams integrated small fiberglass waterproof 12V landscape lights into the design to create fairy windows and a door, carefully taping the glass covers to protect them during the subsequent concrete application. During challenging phases of the project, a picture of his daughter kept in the room served as a source of motivation.
Concrete was applied to the trunk to create a realistic texture, while papier-mâché was used for the outer branches. Adams then meticulously painted the tree, incorporating various colors for a natural and vibrant look. He also undertook the renovation of the room's flooring, installing hardwood throughout, with the exception of a curved area designated for a soft green carpet. Fairy windows were crafted, and watercolor paper was used to mimic glass. The final decorative touches included silk branches, plastic ferns, an assortment of birds and butterflies, hand-blown glass ornaments, and elaborate foliage, all arranged at the tree's top. The enchanted environment was completed with strands of Christmas bulbs controlled by a dimmer, an integrated 12V reading light within the tree, and a cozy sitting area in its center, much to his daughter's delight.
