Who Needs a Closet When You Can Have a Secret Reading Loft?

Danielle McKim, a DIY enthusiast, embarked on a creative project to design her son Taylor's 'big boy room,' incorporating his requests for the color red and trains. Having recently moved into a new home, McKim utilized existing items such as a large nine-drawer mid-century dresser and a bordeaux and blue Persian rug to establish a color palette and storage solutions. Her primary objective was to infuse the train theme throughout the room in a refined and stylized manner. McKim initiated the room's transformation by addressing the walls. She personally installed board and batten wood in just four hours, working during her daughter's nap time. This time-saving approach involved skipping back panels and retaining existing baseboards. After applying several paint swatches, she selected Behr's Red Pepper, a shade she considered a perfect red, as Taylor's preference was simply 'red.' For the upper half of the walls, McKim sought to create a wallpaper effect. Inspired by a Pinterest image, she initially ordered a stencil from Etsy but found it unsuitable. Instead, she crafted her own stamp from a staining pad and used a cardboard guide to create a grid-like pattern. This meticulous stamping process, executed during her children's nap and meal times, took two days to complete. Her next significant undertaking was converting the closet into a secret reading loft, a project she acknowledged as challenging despite her DIY experience. Prioritizing safety, she constructed a sturdy platform, testing its structural integrity multiple times. For the ladder, she opted for plumbing pipes from Home Depot, believing they better suited the train theme than her initial idea of a wood and rope ladder. The seat cushion and pillows were fashioned from repurposed West Elm curtains, while $2 denim fabric was used to create book slings, a modification made for better book security after observing her children playing. The space was finalized with a vintage map, a sentimental item McKim had bought when she was pregnant with her son. McKim further integrated the denim textile by using it to create a train-themed punch-needle pillow for the bed and a decorative roman window shade. She also highlighted the transformative impact of custom curtains, choosing simple white ones with a railroad-like trim from Martha+Ash to ensure they would grow with her son. The train theme was subtly reinforced through prints from an Etsy shop, displayed in floating glass frames made by McKim to avoid obscuring the hand-stamped walls. The final thematic touch was a DIY railroad crossing sign made from leftover board and batten wood, complete with remote-controlled green and red LED lights. Upon revealing the finished room to Taylor after daycare, his initial timidity gave way to appreciation, culminating in him reflecting, 'You made all that for me?' This moment underscored the emotional value and success of McKim's dedicated DIY efforts. #KidsRoomDesign #DIYProjects #ThemedBedroom #ReadingNook #HomeRenovation #InteriorDesign #CreativeStorage #BudgetDecor #ParentingTips #KidsRoomDesign #DIYProjects #ThemedBedroom #ReadingNook #HomeRenovation #InteriorDesign #CreativeStorage #BudgetDecor #ParentingTips
