Why Your Closet Could Be Your Ultimate Passion Project

This article explores the concept of transforming ordinary closets into personalized, inspiring spaces that reflect individual passions and creativity. Drawing inspiration from Veranda Editor-in-Chief Steele Marcoux's concept of "party closets" for organizing entertaining essentials, the piece delves into how various creatives envision their ultimate fantasy closets. The article features insights from three tastemakers: floral and event designer Keith G. Robinson, artist and accessories designer Carol Muthiga-Oyekunle, and vintner and owner of Rudd Estate winery Samantha Rudd. Each creative collaborated with California Closets to bring their unique visions to life, showcasing the extensive customization options available. Keith G. Robinson, a floral and event designer, imagines his ideal "curio corner" within his 1841 Georgia farmhouse. This space, situated between his kitchen and dining room, is designed to inspire experimentation with entertaining essentials. It features drawers for placemats, trays, chargers, and sterling flatware, while open shelves proudly display collections of candlesticks, vases, Paris porcelain, and over 30 sets of antique china. A notable design element is a pullout shelf hidden behind a drawer that functions as a worktop for arranging place settings. Against a dusty sage backdrop, pieces from his Booths Chinese Tree collection frame a garden-facing door, where he sources flowers for his arrangements. Before guests arrive, tapestry-inspired draperies can conceal his workshop, adding an element of surprise. Carol Muthiga-Oyekunle, an artist and accessories designer, envisions a sophisticated dressing room as her passion project, conceptualized for a Haussmannian-style apartment in Paris. This opulent space features gold-trimmed antiqued mirror wardrobe panels, a leaf-draped, brushed brass chandelier, and a woven metal curtain, influenced by French designer Sophie Mallebranche, which gently filters sunlight. Muthiga-Oyekunle integrates her international aesthetic by displaying vibrant minaudières and necklaces from her Lolita Lorenzo collection on open shelves. The room's navy and ecru palette provides a tranquil backdrop, allowing colorful elements like a hexagonal mirror and graphic artwork to stand out. A built-in vanity with a shell-shaped chair by Patricia Urquiola for Moroso serves as a self-care sanctuary, creating a serene environment for relaxation and dreaming. Samantha Rudd, a second-generation vintner, describes her fantasy closet as a "magical curiosity cabinet"—a full-bodied tasting room that reflects her passion for wine, soil, and land. Inspired by the vibrant mixed-media collages of artist Geraldine Neuwirth, the room features a wildly colorful scheme, including House of Hackney’s Hollyhocks wallpaper and whimsical glassware displayed on denim-hued open shelves. Located off the kitchen, this space is designed as a source of inspiration for Rudd's casual and creative entertaining style. Drawers in this area are filled with unique discoveries such as soil jars, dried herbs, and flowers, which she incorporates into her tablescapes to bring a sense of place and rich terroir to her parties. Built-in racks are also featured for storing craft wines from her Crossroads label. #ClosetDesign #HomeOrganization #InteriorDecorating #CustomClosets #EntertainingSpaces #LuxuryLiving #CaliforniaClosets #DesignInspiration #PersonalizedSpaces #ClosetDesign #HomeOrganization #InteriorDecorating #CustomClosets #EntertainingSpaces #LuxuryLiving #CaliforniaClosets #DesignInspiration #PersonalizedSpaces
