These Are The Most Popular Nursery Themes & Colors Of 2021
Designing a baby's nursery is a significant part of pregnancy, offering a tangible way for expectant parents to envision their child. For 2021, several popular themes, colors, and design elements are emerging in nursery decor, as highlighted by Etsy Trend Expert Dayna Isom Johnson and Naomi Coe, founder of Little Crown Interiors and author of 'Your Perfect Nursery: A Step-By-Step Guide For Creating The Nursery Of Your Dreams'. When incorporating trends, Coe advises utilizing decor and accessories that are easily replaceable, allowing for flexibility as the child grows and avoiding substantial long-term investments in fleeting styles.
Outer space motifs are predicted to be a major trend, with Etsy reporting a 77% increase in searches for space-themed wallpaper and a 24% increase for moon-shaped shelves in the last three months compared to the previous year. Similarly, safari-themed decor is on the rise, evidenced by a 46% increase in searches for safari-themed baby mobiles. Parents can integrate this trend through rugs, framed animal pictures, mobiles, or crib bedding without committing to full wallpaper. Removable wallpaper continues to be a popular choice due to its affordability, ease of application, and non-committal nature, making it ideal for incorporating trendy or youthful designs that can be changed later without damaging walls.
Soft, layered textures and neutral palettes are replacing geometric prints and stark black and white schemes, focusing on coziness and comfort. Requests for nurseries with woven accents are increasing, and elements like boucle fabrics for gliders and pillows, woven wall hangings, fuzzy mobiles, and shaggy rugs contribute to this aesthetic. Butterfly decor is also gaining traction, with Pinterest searches for “butterfly nursery” steadily rising. This theme can be implemented boldly with wallpaper or subtly with mobiles and decals.
Regarding wall colors, neutrals are expanding beyond white, beige, and gray to include softer shades like lavender, mauve, and blush. While bright crisp whites were popular in previous years, there's a current shift towards warmer, soft-layered neutrals. Coe emphasizes the importance of sampling paint colors on walls and observing them at different times of the day to ensure satisfaction, particularly for a room that will be frequently used. Sculptural shapes, influenced by art deco, are also finding their way into nurseries through oval cribs, sculptural gliders, gilded accents, and arched mirrors and shelves. This trend focuses on comforting appeal with soft textures and interesting forms, allowing parents to adopt aspects without fully embracing a specific theme. Finally, nature and greenery are increasingly incorporated into nurseries. Live or faux plants, leafy wallpapers, floral touches, and nature-inspired art bring an outdoor element indoors. For timeless designs, Isom Johnson recommends decor that transitions well into toddlerhood and beyond, such as natural wood accents, chic play mats, kid-friendly boho rugs, muted color schemes, and adaptable furniture.
