7 Blue Nurseries That Aren’t Pastel Everything
This article explores a variety of blue shades for nursery design, moving beyond the traditional baby blue. It highlights seven different nursery spaces, each showcasing a unique approach to incorporating blue, demonstrating its versatility and ability to create diverse atmospheres from soothing to energetic.
The first example, a robin’s-egg blue nursery designed by Katherine Thewlis, utilizes a toned-down hue called 'Views by Clare' to cover the walls from floor to ceiling. This choice allows for flexibility in adding vibrant complementary elements, such as a strawberry red lamp or magenta artwork, without clashing with the overall palette.
The second case presents an electric blue nursery, where Piera Gelardia opted for Farrow & Ball’s 'St. Gile’s Blue.' Despite its brightness, this shade is described as comforting, reflecting her daughter Viva’s energetic yet peaceful personality. The room is envisioned as a sanctuary for imagination and dreams.
A powder blue nursery serves as a shared office and nursery space in Dee Eke’s Long Island City apartment. Both zones feature a 'Clare' paint color and 'Flor' tiles underfoot. The multicolored floor tiles provide a modern contrast to the pastel walls, a creative solution adopted after the original single colorway for the tiles was discontinued.
Next, a denim blue nursery by designer Nicole Hirsch uses blue as a prominent accent color. Glossy moldings painted in 'Old Glory by Benjamin Moore' and a textured denim-like patchwork glider contribute significantly to the room's impact, standing out against graphic wallpaper.
The fifth example features a limewashed blue nursery by Forward Interiors, which avoids a saccharine feel by incorporating black accents. These black elements, seen on the trim, art frame, and a custom stained-wood dresser, provide a contrast to the soft 'Bauwerk Colour' walls.
A botanical blue nursery demonstrates a method of selecting paint colors directly from existing design elements. Designer Laura Kern Hennessey matched the slate blue of the lower walls to the leafy stems of a hand-painted meadow mural in her son's room, ensuring a cohesive and magical aesthetic.
Finally, a 'Goodnight Moon' blue nursery in artist Raven Roxanne’s Charleston home features deep cornflower walls and Kermit-esque green trim, both from Fine Paints of Europe. This bold color combination, while intense, is effectively managed by the room's 13-foot-tall ceilings, creating a unique and imaginative environment reminiscent of the classic children's book.
