Screenshot After Screenshot Helped This Bathroom Reno Go Smoothly
Racheal Jackson, a muralist from Portland, Oregon, recently renovated the bathroom in her old house before selling it. Her primary regret about moving was leaving behind this newly transformed space, which featured bold, colorful tiles covering both the shower and floors. Jackson observed that many homes on the market showcased mundane gray and white bathrooms, prompting her to take a risk with vibrant colors, anticipating that a future homeowner would appreciate the unique design.
The renovation was driven by a need for functionality rather than solely aesthetics. The previous shower layout was inconvenient, blocking a significant portion of the room. In her latest renovation, Jackson addressed this by extending the bathroom into the adjacent main bedroom, creating an additional 9 square feet. This expansion allowed for a spacious double shower setup. Remarkably, Jackson performed most of the replumbing herself, learning on the job after a hired plumber failed to return.
The tile selection process was meticulous. Jackson envisioned large sections of color and ordered 12 tile samples from Fireclay, eventually selecting nine specific hues: Desert Bloom, Mandarin, Ember, Mustard Seed, Aegean Sea, Lake Tahoe, Lichen, Spruce Gloss, and Magnolia with Black Patine. Her plan involved using all nine colors for a DNA-sequencing-like pattern on the floor, while Desert Bloom and Ember were chosen for the interior shower walls to introduce warmer tones, a departure from the more common blue and green options.
To execute the complex floor design, Jackson utilized digital tools. She took screenshots of her chosen Fireclay tiles, resized them to match the 2-by-8-inch rectangles she intended to use, and then arranged them on a to-scale mock-up of the bathroom in Adobe Illustrator. She spent weeks refining the pattern, aiming for a balanced distribution of darker and lighter shades. A key principle was to avoid placing certain colors, like Mustard Seed and Desert Bloom, next to each other. To maintain a fresh feel and add visual interest, she incorporated textured white rectangles with crackly black details.
The installation of the tile, overseen by Jackson's contractor while she was out of town, proceeded smoothly. She provided detailed instructions, including specific placements for shower niches and how the tiles should align with edge pieces, even supplying 11-by-17-inch color mock-ups. For the finishing touches, Jackson chose matte black plumbing fixtures and deliberately avoided adding wallpaper or murals, ensuring that the vibrant floor tile remained the focal point of the renovated bathroom.
