Old House Handyman: Shower makeover doesn't dampen bathroom renovation
The author shares an account of his daughter's extensive bathroom renovation project in her century-old house, which began after a significant leak was discovered. The leak led to the uncovering of serious plumbing and structural issues, necessitating a complete overhaul of the bathroom. The project, lasting nine months, involved a collaborative effort from friends, neighbors, and a plumber, with the author's daughter acting as the primary planner and project manager. Her determination was a key factor in navigating the complexities of renovating an old home.
The daughter took charge of redesigning the bathroom, meticulously selecting plumbing and lighting fixtures, and choosing the tile for the shower surround. A particularly challenging aspect was the shower space, which featured a window in the middle of the long wall above the tub. While simpler solutions like a molded acrylic surround with a window cut-out were available, she opted for a more complex tiled shower. This decision introduced a considerable degree of difficulty, especially given her lack of prior tiling experience.
The chosen tile pattern was intricate, and she further complicated the task by deciding to install wall coves to hold bath products. These coves required precise tile cutting and significant patience, skills she developed throughout the project. The author offered assistance with tasks like cutting bull-nose edges for the coves and providing moral support, while she handled the majority of the demanding work.
Her approach mirrored that of a seasoned renovator: she consulted experts, conducted thorough research, and acquired or borrowed the necessary tools. Her immense patience and commitment to doing much of the work herself, with help from family and friends, resulted in substantial cost savings. The culmination of these efforts was a fully functional, beautifully renovated bathroom, allowing her to start the New Year by finally taking a shower in her own home, a testament to her perseverance and resourcefulness.
