Presenting Koro Nest—A New, Quirky, Aesthetic & Sustainable Home In Himachal Pradesh
The Koro Nest is a luxurious and sustainable homestay nestled in the lush green mountains of Himachal Pradesh, conceptualized and brought to life by the design-loving sisters Rashi and Rachita Singh. The project began as an idea to build a personal home in the mountains but evolved into a multi-apartment holiday home due to the duo's passion for design and the inspiring natural surroundings. Their father, Inder Pal Singh, an architect, provided technical guidance and fostered their creative vision throughout the process.
Developing Koro Nest presented several significant challenges, primarily due to the unique mountainous terrain. Cutting into the mountain and ensuring structural support for a multi-floored building was a complex task. The local labor force, while enthusiastic, lacked specialized skills, necessitating constant on-site supervision and training from the sisters to ensure the desired design execution. Furthermore, all construction materials, ranging from tiles and paints to wooden planks, fabrics, furniture, and rugs, had to be meticulously sourced from Delhi and transported to the remote location. The unpredictable weather, including snowy days and sudden downpours, frequently caused delays and extended project deadlines.
Despite potential creative differences, the family-centric design approach fostered a collaborative environment. Each family member was allocated specific spaces, allowing them to express their individual creativity. This method ensured that every room and corner of Koro Nest possesses a distinct character, contributing to the homestay's unique aesthetic. The design philosophy aimed to create a cozy, storybook-like mountain home that evokes a sense of adventure and joy, seamlessly blending architectural distinctiveness with respect for the natural environment.
A standout feature of Koro Nest is its entertainment area, 'The Nest,' which is the designers' favorite element. This space was inspired by the Fibonacci spiral, intended to recreate the sensation of being enveloped by nature. The initial skepticism from contractors regarding the unconventional design was overcome through their persistence and the use of mild steel beams (girders). The Nest is finished with pinewood on the interior and hand-cut cement sheets on the exterior, resulting in a visually poetic and radical design that offers a surprising element in the Koro Valley.
Sustainability is a core principle embedded in Koro Nest's design. The sisters extensively utilized eco-friendly materials such as bamboo for ceilings and jute and cane for lighting fixtures. They also incorporated recycled elements, including repainted tables and repurposed 40-year-old frames and candle stands for decor, demonstrating a commitment to mindful consumption and environmental responsibility. Given the context of the pandemic, Koro Nest implemented stringent COVID-19 safety protocols during its construction phase, including mandatory mask-wearing, regular sanitization, temperature checks for laborers, and limiting the number of workers together to ensure safety.
Beyond the property, Koro Nest offers proximity to natural attractions like trekking trails and vast green expanses. Nearby points of interest include the Bon Monastery, Kasauli Brewery, Mohan Shakti National Heritage Park, and Karol Tibba. The sisters express a deep affection for mountain life, particularly the ever-changing clouds and sunsets, and the soul-cleansing experience of the wind rustling through pine forests. They advocate for conscious travel, especially in the current global health climate, emphasizing the importance of adhering to safety protocols, being mindful of water and waste, and respecting local customs and communities when visiting mountainous regions.
