An interior designer critiqued my bare-bones outdoor space. She gave me simple tricks to make it cool and functional.

The author of the article, a new homeowner, faced challenges in decorating a large, empty outdoor deck. Seeking professional advice, the author consulted interior designer Kathy Kuo, founder and CEO of Kathy Kuo Home, to transform the space into a functional and aesthetically pleasing area. The consultation provided several actionable recommendations for addressing the deck's current issues and enhancing its overall design. Kuo's initial recommendation focused on updating the deck's structural elements. She advised applying a water-resistant stain in a neutral brown with gray undertones to the railings, aiming for a rustic yet sophisticated feel. Additionally, she suggested painting the support beams a dark-charcoal gray to achieve a modern-farmhouse-inspired look, contributing to a more updated appearance. Addressing the issue of clutter, the designer proposed practical storage solutions. The author's deck had accumulated various outdoor items and shoes, creating disorganization. Kuo recommended incorporating an outdoor-specific storage cabinet or a shoe bench to conceal these items. She emphasized selecting pieces made for outdoor use that would complement the deck's eventual furniture. Furthermore, she advised relocating a ping-pong table from the deck to the garage to establish a clutter-free foundation for design. To manage the deck's substantial size, Kuo suggested dividing it into distinct functional zones rather than treating it as a single large outdoor living room. She outlined a plan to create three specific areas: a dining section featuring a round table, a lounging area, and a grilling zone. This approach aims to make the space more organized and versatile. To further define these zones, Kuo recommended using outdoor rugs, drawing inspiration from the home's indoor decor for color palettes and design styles to ensure a smooth transition between indoor and outdoor aesthetics. The designer also highlighted methods for enhancing visual interest and intimacy. She suggested mixing various textures, materials, and wood tones in the furniture selections, ensuring they contrast and complement the existing wooden railings and floors. For creating a more intimate and experiential atmosphere, Kuo recommended incorporating plants and lighting. She offered options for both real plants, if gardening was feasible, and UV-resistant faux plants for easier maintenance. Lighting suggestions included string lights and layered outdoor lanterns of different sizes for the dining and lounge areas. These strategies were intended to add depth and softness to the overall outdoor design. The author's main takeaway from the consultation was the importance of dividing the large deck into functional sections before proceeding with decoration. This segmented approach made the daunting task of designing a vast outdoor area feel more manageable and less overwhelming, shifting the perception from a single, empty space to multiple purposeful zones. #InteriorDesign #OutdoorSpace #DeckDecor #HomeImprovement #DesignTips #ClutterSolutions #ZoningOutdoors #InteriorDesign #OutdoorSpace #DeckDecor #HomeImprovement #DesignTips #ClutterSolutions #ZoningOutdoors
