Experts explain how to create extra living space outdoors

The post-pandemic era has seen a significant rise in the desire for outdoor living spaces, transforming gardens into comfortable extensions of our homes. With an average UK garden spanning 188 square metres, the potential for expanding living areas outdoors is vast. Innovations in materials for outdoor textiles, rugs, lounge sets, and lighting have made it easier to replicate indoor comforts outside. To effectively create extra outdoor living space, it is recommended to divide the garden into distinct zones. This can be achieved by identifying areas that receive the most sunlight and creating 'rooms' using different levels, planters, furniture, or varied flooring materials like lawns, gravel, paving, or decking. Incorporating structures with walls, columns, or roofing can further enhance the feeling of an outdoor room, providing cozy corners and privacy. Adding weather-resistant artwork can also contribute to the outdoor room aesthetic. Preparing for diverse weather conditions is crucial. Awnings and outdoor canopies offer shade on sunny days and protection during rain, extending the usability of the outdoor space. Options like louvred, retractable, or solid roofs allow for control over light and openness, and can even be integrated with lighting and heating. Attaching canopies to the house can also help draw more natural light into interior spaces. Seamlessly linking indoor and outdoor areas through glazed doors, such as French doors, sliding doors, or bi-folds, can effectively double living space during warmer months while providing access to daylight and fresh air. Ensuring the patio or decked area is on the same level as the interior creates a unified, expansive feel. Additional glazing, like rooflights and clerestory windows, can further boost natural light and frame garden views. A growing trend in garden design involves extending internal flooring outdoors. Using the same floor tiles, especially porcelain with anti-slip properties suitable for both interior and exterior use, creates a continuous look that makes indoor spaces appear larger. Opening patio doors further enhances this seamless integration, offering more usable space. Outdoor kitchens are increasingly seen as a direct extension of indoor living, designed to complement home aesthetics while withstanding the UK climate. Materials like vitreous enamel, stainless steel, and corten steel are durable and resistant to heat and scratches. Dekton is a popular choice for flooring and work surfaces due to its resemblance to natural materials and its UV and frost resistance. Thoughtful planning for sinks, outdoor fridges, and task lighting, along with professional installation for electrical, plumbing, and gas work, is essential. Creating comfortable lounging areas involves selecting stylish and durable outdoor seating. Corner lounge sets and modular designs are popular for their relaxed atmosphere, while individual outdoor sofas and armchairs offer flexibility. Measuring the space accurately helps in choosing appropriately sized furniture. Minimalist designs and hardwearing, weatherproof materials are favored for their practicality and aesthetic appeal. For alfresco dining, versatile dining sets are recommended. Adjustable-height tables and corner sofas can adapt to various occasions, from meals to casual drinks. Dedicated dining zones should be strategically placed to maximize natural light and warmth, with portable tables offering flexibility for morning sun. Incorporating built-in tabletop fire pits provides warmth as temperatures drop in the evening. Outdoor bars have gained popularity for at-home socializing. Accessibility is key, suggesting locations closer to indoor areas or purpose-built pathways. Shelter from the elements, such as canopies, parasols, or pergolas adorned with climbing plants, extends usability throughout the year. String lights and built-in fire pits create an intimate night-time ambiance, while home-like accessories like artwork, floral arrangements, and glassware add authenticity and charm. Layered lighting schemes are vital for creating ambiance and ensuring practical illumination in outdoor spaces. Options include festoon lights or outdoor chandeliers for general brightness, supplemented by uplighters, floor lamps, and lanterns to highlight features and add warmth. Solar-powered or rechargeable freestanding designs offer flexibility for placement. Various outdoor heating options, from patio heaters to garden fire pits, can extend the enjoyment of outdoor spaces into cooler evenings. Patio heaters, available in gas or electric, are efficient for larger areas, often incorporating lighting. Fire pits provide an atmospheric focal point for gathering, while dining tables with integrated fire pits are ideal for entertaining. Open fireplaces or wood-burning stove-style heaters can enhance a homely feel. Upgrading soft furnishings is crucial for integrating outdoor spaces with indoor aesthetics. With many products now suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, choosing styles that match the home's interior creates a cohesive look. Modern outdoor textiles, including weaves and eco-digital prints, are designed to be luxurious, fade-resistant, water-resistant, and feature anti-mold finishes and feather-like fillings, ensuring comfort and durability without compromising style. Adding accessories can further create an at-home feel outdoors. Soft blankets, throws, large outdoor floor cushions, and all-weather rugs transform spaces into warm and welcoming areas. Using varied textures and a cohesive color scheme adds visual interest. Side tables, lanterns, candles, fresh flowers, and decorative planters enhance the intimate atmosphere. Strategically placed mirrors can also create the illusion of larger spaces, beneficial for smaller gardens. #OutdoorLiving #GardenDesign #HomeExtension #ExteriorDesign #AlfrescoDining #OutdoorKitchens #OutdoorLighting #OutdoorHeating #SoftFurnishings #HomeDecor #OutdoorLiving #GardenDesign #HomeExtension #ExteriorDesign #AlfrescoDining #OutdoorKitchens #OutdoorLighting #OutdoorHeating #SoftFurnishings #HomeDecor
