A Beach-Bar-Inspired Kitchen Is Just One of the Reasons This Florida House Feels Like Endless Summer
Lindsay Rhodes designed a family home in Florida's Scenic Highway 30A Corridor for clients from her hometown of Nashville. The clients, who own Frankie’s Bike Shop, desired a forever home that reflected their fun and happy personalities, aiming for an aesthetic that blended "old-school Florida condo—rattan and seashells—but fresh and updated." Rhodes achieved this by adhering to a cohesive, shore-inspired color palette and incorporating unique antique finds like elephant side tables and coconut lamps.
A key design element is the kitchen, intentionally crafted to evoke the atmosphere of a beach bar in a boutique hotel rather than a typical family kitchen. This is evident in the seashell-pink hue of the cabinets, range, and refrigerator. The dining table is set at a slightly lower height than standard breakfast tables, encouraging longer, more relaxed gatherings. Even functional elements like the range hood received a custom treatment, with a curved, striped cover designed to mimic a country-club-style awning. This detail required specialized woodworking, as each piece had to be wet and bent to achieve the desired curved specifications.
The home's overall design exudes a relaxed, refined, and highly personalized feel. Notable features include a drawing of the homeowners' daughter in the game room and a bunk room specifically designed for visiting cousins. The project, however, was not without its challenges. Calacatta marble slabs for the kitchen counters and backsplash arrived broken and needed replacement, and a vintage Murano glass chandelier cracked during transit, requiring expert repair. Despite these setbacks, Rhodes successfully delivered a home that is both whimsical and sophisticated.
Key areas within the 4,000-square-foot, four-bedroom, three-and-a-half-bath residence include a kitchen with Benjamin Moore 'Boudoir' cabinet paint, Llot Llov pendants, Design Within Reach counter stools, and Verellen chairs with Pavoni leather seats. The kitchen island features a half-moon shape to facilitate conversation. A white Lacanche range and Calacatta Viola marble countertops complete the space. The great room boasts de Gournay wallcovering, Ton chairs, a custom banquette in Pavoni leather, and Sunbrella fabric pillows, all centered around a green marble table designed by Rhodes. The living room's focal point is a custom terrazzo fireplace surround by Concrete Collaborative, with drapery in Tulu fabric and a Verellen sofa in Jim Thompson fabric with Samuel & Sons fringe. The color scheme throughout these areas draws inspiration from palm trees, sand, and seashells.
The powder room features Flat Vernacular wallpaper, a CB2 mirror, a custom vanity, and Cemento Collection floor tiles, creating a vibrant visual impact. The guest room incorporates Hamimi pendants, Benjamin Moore 'Boudoir' paint on walls and doors, Farrow & Ball 'Pink Ground' trim, and an Ananbô mural, contributing to a boutique hotel ambiance. The primary suite showcases a vintage Murano glass chandelier, Verellen chairs in Holland & Sherry fabric, and a Relic Home rug, with Grow House Grow wallpaper and colors inspired by sea glass and coral. The daughter's bathroom is a pink and purple themed space with 1970s Murano sconces. The bunk room utilizes Farrow & Ball 'Mahogany' paint and Kravet fabric drapery, with custom bunk beds and a wave-shaped backboard. The daughter’s room is feminine, featuring House of Hackney wallcovering, a custom Relic Home rug, and an Ottoline scallop shell fabric bed, reflecting a mermaid theme. The game room, painted in Farrow & Ball 'Mahogany' with a Sherwin-Williams 'Alabaster' ceiling and a Relic Home rug, offers a dark and moody contrast to the brighter areas of the home. The foyer features a handblown Murano glass chandelier, Serena & Lily bins, Work + Sea wallcovering, and a custom Sunbrella fabric bench cushion, serving as a functional 'drop zone.' The outdoor pool area features Cemento Collection tiles, Made Goods tables, a Serena & Lily sofa in Perennials fabric, and Business & Pleasure Co. umbrellas, extending the home's cohesive design and vacation-like atmosphere.
