This California Home's Kitchen Has the Ultimate Trick for Creating Indoor-Outdoor Flow
The article details the design journey and unique features of 'Cliff House,' a Sonoma, California property developed by interior designers Austin Carrier and Alex Mutter-Rottmayer of Hommeboys, in collaboration with James Rottmayer of Rottmayer Design + Build. The project originated from a fire-damaged 16-acre lot in the 2017 Wine Country fires, which the team saw as an opportunity for revitalization. Perched on a rocky hill overlooking the Valley of the Moon, the home was named Cliff House due to its dramatic location.
The design inspiration for Cliff House was largely drawn from a trip to Morocco, where Carrier and Mutter-Rottmayer sought to blend contemporary style with traditional building methods. This trip influenced their material palette, incorporating elements like natural zellige tile, wood-beam ceilings, and live-edge finishes. Upon their return, they selected materials that harmonized with the calming California landscape, ensuring a seamless integration of the home with its natural surroundings.
A central focus of the design was to capitalize on the stunning views. In the kitchen and main living room, massive floor-to-ceiling moving walls of glass were installed. These expansive glass walls can be opened, creating a dramatic indoor-outdoor flow that epitomizes California living. The kitchen, considered the heart of the home, served as the starting point for design decisions, with elements and details often replicated or adapted in other areas to ensure cohesion throughout the house. An example of this cohesive design is the wood-slatted detail from the kitchen island being reinterpreted as a vanity in the primary bathroom.
The designers skillfully blended earthy, old-world materials with modern applications. They also introduced variety in material use, such as incorporating different wood species in various rooms to create distinct energies while maintaining an overarching theme. The office-library, for instance, features a rustic orange Roman Clay wall finish called Yosemite, designed to be energizing, paired with warm white oak cabinets, and further connected to the home's aesthetic through fluted wood detailing.
Throughout the home, the emphasis on natural materials and colors reflects the surrounding California landscape. Walnut cabinets were bleached to a blond tone, reminiscent of native grasses. Raw, free-form stone walls were utilized in the kitchen and pantry, and a textured Venetian plaster wall finish was applied to the faceted marble fireplace surround. Even custom cedar doors for the primary suite were stained in a bleached peachy tone to match the rough-sawed ceiling, highlighting the meticulous attention to detail and collaborative spirit that brought Cliff House to life, transforming a once-abandoned plot into a testament to livable beauty and perseverance.
