Smart bulbs vs. smart switches: The pros and cons of connected lighting

The CNET Smart Home project is exploring various smart lighting solutions, examining the advantages and disadvantages of smart bulbs, smart switches, and smart plugs/outlets. This initiative aims to provide insights into automating home lighting for consumers considering smart home upgrades. Smart bulbs offer a straightforward way to automate lighting, as they are direct replacements for traditional bulbs with integrated wireless capabilities. Some smart bulbs, like Lifx White 800 LEDs, use Wi-Fi or Bluetooth for direct communication with a smartphone, eliminating the need for an additional hub. However, these often come with a higher price point, making large-scale implementation expensive. A more common and often more affordable option for smart bulbs utilizes the ZigBee wireless protocol, found in products such as Philips Hue, Osram Lightify, Belkin WeMo LEDs, GE Link LED, and Cree Connected LED. These bulbs typically require a hub or bridge device to translate ZigBee signals for smartphone control. Many brands offer starter kits that include a bridge, with prices varying from around $50 for a two-bulb TCP kit to $200 for a three-bulb Philips Hue kit. Individual bulb prices range from $15 to $60, with higher-end models offering features like color changing, motion tracking, and even built-in audio. A notable advantage of some ZigBee systems is the ability to mix and match bulbs from different brands under a single control device, such as the Philips Hue bridge. Smart bulbs are generally easy to set up and move between fixtures, and can offer advanced features like color customization. However, they are typically limited to A-shape bulbs with standard E-shape screw-in bases, posing compatibility issues for other fixture types or in-wall dimmer switches. Brightness and color temperature options can also be limited, and the smart features are disabled if the physical switch is turned off. Smart switches provide an alternative approach by automating the physical on/off control of existing light fixtures. This method involves replacing standard light switches with smart versions that integrate with Wi-Fi or ZigBee. Wi-Fi smart switches, such as the Belkin WeMo Light Switch, connect directly to a home network, while ZigBee versions require a hub. Higher-end options from companies like Lutron use proprietary signals. Smart switches generally cost around $50, making them pricier per control point than individual smart bulbs but potentially more cost-effective for fixtures with multiple bulbs. Installation is more complex, requiring some familiarity with home wiring, and relocating a smart switch involves re-installation. A key benefit is the freedom to use any type of bulb, which is ideal for specialized fixtures or when specific light quality is desired. Automated lighting schedules can still function even if the physical switch is off, enhancing convenience and ensuring smart features remain active. This approach is also practical for guest rooms, as guests do not need to be instructed to leave the light on for automation to work. Smart plugs and outlets offer another layer of flexibility for smart lighting and general appliance automation. Smart plugs enable remote control of any device plugged into them, with some models specifically designed for lamps, offering dimming capabilities. Smart outlets, which are hardwired into walls, provide a more integrated appearance. These devices offer plug-and-play simplicity, similar to smart bulbs, and allow for easy reconfiguration of automated devices. Beyond lighting, smart plugs can automate small appliances like desk fans, space heaters, and coffeemakers. They can also be used with power strips to control multiple devices simultaneously, conserving energy by preventing power draw from idle electronics. New smart plugs, like the iDevices Switch, support platforms such as Apple HomeKit for Siri voice control, while others, like Belkin WeMo Switches, are compatible with Amazon Echo. While smart plugs are easy to use and versatile, smart outlets require more involved installation. Neither can control hardwired lights or fixtures that are not plug-in. The cost per smart plug or outlet is generally higher than that of a single smart bulb, and some designs may obstruct adjacent outlets. For the CNET Smart Home, a combination of smart bulbs and switches will likely be prioritized for a seamless, built-in aesthetic, supplemented by smart plugs where practical, all integrated through a robust central hub system. #SmartHome #SmartLighting #SmartBulbs #SmartSwitches #SmartPlugs #HomeAutomation #CNETSmartHome #HomeDecor #HomeTechnology #SmartHome #SmartLighting #SmartBulbs #SmartSwitches #SmartPlugs #HomeAutomation #CNETSmartHome #HomeDecor #HomeTechnology
