When Gallons of Car Paint Meet ’70s IKEA Cabinetry, You Get High-Shine Perfection

Emily Ward, half of the design duo Pierce & Ward, along with her partner, actor Giovanni Ribisi, transformed Japanese ceramic artist Mineo Mizuno’s mid-century house in Atwater Village, Los Angeles, into a family retreat. The two-bedroom property, originally serving as an office and studio for Ribisi, became their primary residence after Ward decided to downsize from their larger Marin County home. The renovation focused on re-imagining the existing structure, particularly the kitchen and primary bathroom, without a complete gut renovation. Ward aimed to infuse warmth into the industrial interiors, characterized by concrete floors and stainless steel countertops, while embracing the house's original Japanese aesthetic. A central aspect of the transformation involved updating the kitchen and primary bathroom's 1970s IKEA cabinetry. Instead of replacing these well-preserved, ample storage units, Ward opted to refinish them. She highlighted the excellent condition of the existing cabinetry, noting the perfectly aged wood inside and the superior quality of the old European hinges compared to modern alternatives. The industrial elements were retained, with Ward choosing to 'lean into what felt organic and Japanese' to achieve a harmonious blend of styles. This approach demonstrated a commitment to sustainability and a creative use of existing resources. For the kitchen cabinets, Ward used car paint to achieve a super-high-gloss finish in Benjamin Moore’s Chocolate Candy Brown. This process required several attempts to achieve the desired color match and necessitated a 30-day evacuation of the house due to paint fumes. The result was a highly satisfying, durable, and lustrous surface that dramatically altered the kitchen's appearance. Similarly, in the primary bathroom, Ward applied the same refinishing technique to the existing cabinetry, countertops, and sink, using Benjamin Moore’s Southfield Green, a color consistent with the Pierce & Ward store's aesthetic. The refinishing work was executed by Miracle Method, which employs a specialized process involving surface cleaning, a bonding agent, and fine-spray compressor application of the car paint. Ward's renovation also incorporated elements of Japanese art, such as kintsugi, the art of repairing broken pottery with gold. This philosophy inspired her to repair the broken Formica backsplash behind the stove with a slab of pebbly green marble. Leftover marble was then used to patch a gap in the floor created when the dining room was opened up to the living room, exemplifying a 'waste not, want not' approach. Another unique feature was the repurposing of a wall-mounted display case, inherited from the previous owner, Mizuno, who used it for ceramic work. Ward transformed it into a storage solution for 84 mugs, showcasing both practical utility and sentimental value with handmade ceramics from her family. Lighting in the kitchen underwent a significant change from harsh fluorescent office lighting. Rather than removing the existing fixtures, Ward and Ribisi opted to diffuse the light using custom shoji screens, further integrating the Japanese aesthetic and enhancing the overall ambiance of the space. This strategic upgrade contributed to the desired warm and organic feel of the industrial interiors. The entire renovation, particularly the kitchen's transformation, was featured on the cover of Domino's special collector’s Makeover issue, highlighting the impact of these thoughtful and strategic design choices. #HomeRenovation #IKEACabinetry #CarPaintFinish #MidCenturyModern #JapaneseDesignInfluence #SustainableDesign #KitchenRemodel #BathroomMakeover #InteriorDesign #BeforeAndAfter #HomeRenovation #IKEACabinetry #CarPaintFinish #MidCenturyModern #JapaneseDesignInfluence #SustainableDesign #KitchenRemodel #BathroomMakeover #InteriorDesign #BeforeAndAfter
