The Mega Anchor is quick to install, immediately load-bearing, and does not require inspection or drying time. External cladding for the cabin is Western Red Cedar, chosen for its durability and stability. This material is resistant to warping, shrinking, and cupping, and its natural chemicals provide inherent protection against moisture damage, making it suitable for a weather-prone region. The cabin was constructed offsite in Victoria, Australia, and then transported and assembled on the Tasmanian site within two days, a process made feasible by the lead contractor Space Cube's previously tested transportable design system. This system involved transporting a prototype 400 miles across the Bass Strait, demonstrating its viability. The design of the Standup Cabin is robust enough to handle a wide range of temperatures, from 32° to 95° Fahrenheit, making it adaptable to various global environments. Saxon Hall is currently collaborating with Davies Construction on a new brand called Fortifab, which focuses on modular buildings and panelized building envelopes, incorporating passive house standards for longevity, health, and comfort. While none of his designs are currently pre-permitted in U.S. municipalities, the typical project timeline from deposit to handover for a Fortifab project is 150 days, excluding approval delays, emphasizing speed and reduced unforeseen costs through offsite construction. Leda Athanasopoulou, a Greek designer with a diverse practice in jewelry, furniture, and interiors, considers the island of Patmos her true home, despite having lived in major cities like Athens, London, New York, and Paris. Her connection to Patmos stems from childhood summers spent in Chora, a preserved, whitewashed village on the island, where her parents began acquiring property in the early 1990s. The village, characterized by its winding stone paths and the 11th-century Christian monastery that crowns it, fostered a sense of familiarity and belonging for Athanasopoulou. Five years ago, Athanasopoulou purchased a 5,400-square-foot, two-story mansion in Chora, a property she had barely noticed as a child. Named Sekiari, the house had been uninhabited since the 1980s, with its last significant restoration occurring in the early 20th century. This previous restoration introduced neo-Classical elements such as patterned cement tiles, enlarged windows with exterior shutters, and a faux-marble fresco in the foyer. However, due to UNESCO-protected architectural preservation rules in Chora, which prohibit major structural changes, the house largely retained the essence of its first owner, Zannis Sinetos Sekiaris. Sekiaris, a Greek trader, had conjoined three separate structures in 1799, incorporating island-specific details like beige Patmian stone window frames and stamped terra-cotta floor tiles. Undeterred by the structural limitations, Athanasopoulou embarked on a comprehensive redecoration and rearrangement of Sekiari, aiming to create a modern sanctuary that honored the island's traditions. This project marked her fifth on Patmos, following earlier successes like overhauling one of her family's houses at age 19 and developing Pagostas, a monastic three-bedroom hotel. Her extensive experience on Patmos has allowed her to forge strong relationships with local artisans and contractors, who have significantly influenced her minimalist design aesthetic. This architectural project integrates vertical stone walls with horizontal concrete planes, creating a dwelling that blends modernist aesthetics with traditional regional influences. The stone, sourced from local quarries, is prominently featured both on the exterior and interior, providing a textured contrast to the smooth concrete roof slabs. The design of Southwand House draws inspiration from the stone "tower houses" prevalent in the Messinia region, known for their monumental stone structures. The architects sought to create an interplay between these rough-hewn vertical elements and the sleek horizontal concrete, fostering a sense of seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces. This combination blurs boundaries and allows for a feeling of outdoor lightness within the interior, while offering a sense of protection when outdoors. The studio aimed to reflect the organic complexity of Messinian folk architecture, which often features irregularly-shaped stone volumes, courtyards, and passages. To achieve this, they developed a system of orthogonal modules that, when juxtaposed, generate intricate relationships through negative spaces, courtyards, and pathways. The southern end of the building is designed to open up, with the living and dining rooms, as well as an adjacent bedroom, leading out to terraces. A swimming pool extends from these outdoor spaces, wrapping around them and offering views towards the sea. The pool's stepped base provides varying depths, catering to diverse preferences. Southwand House is part of a series of projects by K-Studio, founded by brothers Dimitris and Konstantinos Karampatakis, in scenic Greek locations.
