This Paint Color Can Actually Increase Your Home's Value, According to Zillow

Preparing a home for sale often involves presenting it in the best possible light, typically by aiming for a neutral design scheme. However, Zillow's 2023 paint color analysis suggests a shift in buyer preferences, indicating that darker, moodier homes are now more attractive and can command higher prices. Specifically, charcoal gray has emerged as a top choice, with buyers willing to pay an average of $2,500 more for homes featuring this deeper design. Amanda Pendleton, Zillow's home trends expert, highlights the versatility and appeal of charcoal gray, describing it as a neutral yet dramatic color. It pairs well with jewel tones such as teal, oxblood, magenta, or emerald for a more intense look, or with pastels like pale blue, blush, or peach for a softer effect. Warm earth tones like brown or tan are advised against, as they can clash with gray's cool undertones. Contrarily, the analysis indicates that all-white kitchens, once a popular choice, can negatively impact a home's sale price by over $600. While gray is trending, certain applications can still hinder a sale; for instance, a mid-tone gray front door might reduce value by up to $3,365 compared to other options like cement gray, black, or even mid-tone rosy brown. A mid-toned brown front door, possibly reflecting a preference for wood, can increase offers by $300. In kitchens, deep graphite gray can boost a home's value by approximately $2,512, and a pewter gray kitchen by $2,553. Gray rooms, including living areas and bedrooms, generally fetch at least $1,755 more than those painted in pale neutrals. Color psychology specialist Mehnaz Khan notes that gray offers a sense of retreat and security, appealing to buyers seeking refuge from external uncertainties. Beyond gray, certain colors are identified as detrimental. Bright yellow and forest green can decrease a home's value, though the impact of other colors like red varies significantly based on the room. A fiery red bedroom might deter buyers, leading to offers $161 less, while a tomato red kitchen could increase value by $1,085, and a bright red living room by $836. For homeowners hesitant to repaint, several strategies can add value-boosting color without extensive work. Adding art, especially framed photography or prints, can elevate an all-white kitchen. Incorporating greenery, such as indoor trees or potted topiaries, injects life and color into white spaces. Textiles like washable rugs, colorful dish towels, or patterned roman shades can also introduce color and drama, particularly in kitchens. Ultimately, painting remains an accessible upgrade. Selecting the right paint colors conveys that a home is well-maintained and can significantly appeal to buyers, potentially boosting the sale price. Real estate agents also play a crucial role in educating buyers about the ease of changing wall colors, but proactive painting by sellers can create a stronger first impression. #HomeValue #PaintColors #InteriorDesign #HomeStaging #RealEstateTrends #CharcoalGray #ColorPsychology #HomeDecor #HomeValue #PaintColors #InteriorDesign #HomeStaging #RealEstateTrends #CharcoalGray #ColorPsychology #HomeDecor
