Hanna Li’s Provençal-inspired blend of jute rugs, oak floors and lagoon-colored concrete
Hanna Li, a Los Angeles-based designer, draws inspiration from her global experiences, including her formative years in China and education at the Rhode Island School of Design and Brown University. For her latest mood board, she focused on creating a Provençal-inspired home, reflecting her appreciation for the South of France as a place of self-discovery and the art of living. Li's vision for this home emphasizes the beauty of the surroundings, fostering creativity and a connection to a simpler life. She meticulously selected a range of natural materials to evoke the casual elegance of the Provençal landscape and promote sustainable living practices. The chosen color palette is designed to mirror the warm blues of the Mediterranean Sea, the fragrant lavender fields, and the golden sunlight characteristic of the region's rolling green hills.
Li details the specific elements that contribute to this aesthetic. For a soothing post-gardening experience, she suggests the "Gotta Grow Gardener’s Balm" by Hudson Valley Skin Care. Window treatments feature "Premier Modern Natural Wood Shades" by SelectBlinds as an affordable alternative to custom woven options, and "Old Style Roman Shade" by Hartmann&Forbes;, crafted from bamboo and grasscloth, designed to layer beautifully against limestone tiles. Another Hartmann&Forbes; product, the "Havana Windowcovering," provides contrast and texture for a lived-in feel. For flooring, she recommends oak from Rhodium, available in various customizable sizes and designs, offering flexibility in application. The "Jute Cross Rug in Black" by Nordic Knots is highlighted for its versatility in complementing different styles.
Hardware selections include "Silicon Bronze Brushed Finish Sample" by Rocky Mountain Hardware, noted for its reclaimed and zero-waste sourcing, and the "Traditional Small Plain Cabinet Knob in Tuscan Brass" by Waterstone, which blends traditional style with contemporary appeal. For fabrics, Li chose "Tye Fabric in Aurora" by Rose Tarlow, a hand-dyed linen for an organic feel, suitable for window treatments against limewash walls or sandy plaster. "Greek Folklore Fabric in Plum" by Harwood House is favored for pillows and seat cushions, especially when paired with linen sofas or upholstered beds in similar color families. A "Kravet Design 35693" fabric is also mentioned for a rocking chair, ideal for enjoying a Mediterranean breeze.
Countertops are addressed with "Meteor Countertop Quartz in Light" by Eurostone, a natural-toned option made from 100 percent recycled mineral. A "Vintage Ceramic Celadon Bowl" from Chairish, made from recycled clay, is repurposed as an incense and sage burner, contributing to a smoky, natural interior scent. The "Concrete Basin Sample in Mineral" by Kast is her preferred sink color, chosen for its lagoon-like tone and earthy, grounding texture. Brass finishes, such as the "Patina Brass Finish Sample" by In Common With, are suggested to tie together fixtures and hardware. "Ceramic Disc Surface Mount Sample in Green Clay" by In Common With offers a contemporary accent for a French countryside home, while "Oil Rubbed Bronze Finish Sample" by Newport Brass is recommended for kitchen faucets and trims due to its elegant aging patina.
For additional inspiration, Li references the "Flower Color Guide" by Taylor and Michael Putnam at Phaidon, an encyclopedia that aids in understanding floral terminology and color selection for indoor arrangements. Finally, she mentions "Gotta Grow Gardener’s Soap" by Hudson Valley Skin Care for connecting with plants during cleaning, and a custom carriage-green tile created with Jotham Hung Studio, used as a soothing accent wall in a powder bath, showcasing collaboration with local artists.
