This Ever-Popular Kitchen Layout Is Back (Again)
The open-concept kitchen layout, which saw a brief decline in popularity during the pandemic, is experiencing a resurgence, but with a new outdoor-focused interpretation. A recent kitchen trends study by Houzz indicates that 40 percent of homeowners are opting for open floor plans. However, a significant shift is occurring, with 20 percent of renovators now extending their kitchens to the outdoors, rather than solely integrating them with interior dining or living spaces.
This trend toward indoor-outdoor kitchens is primarily achieved through various architectural modifications. The Houzz survey found that the most common method, preferred by 46 percent of those making the upgrade, involves installing a row of two or more doors leading to the exterior. A single door serves as the second most popular solution, chosen by 29 percent of renovators. Additionally, pass-through windows are a favored option for 14 percent of homeowners seeking to connect their kitchens with the outside.
Several examples illustrate the diverse ways this concept is being implemented. One instance showcases a spacious kitchen designed by Jessica Risko Smith, where accordion-style windows and doors can be pushed aside to create a seamless transition to an adjacent grill and alfresco dining area. This design effectively transforms the kitchen into a double cooking zone.
Another example is found in Brian and Jessie De Lowe’s Montecito, California, home, where the kitchen offers multiple access points to nature. A large garage-door window opens to bar seating, providing an informal connection to the outdoors. Furthermore, a sliding glass partition, both supplied by Architectural Ironworks, leads directly to the patio, offering another pathway for indoor-outdoor flow.
A baking-focused kitchen in Palm Springs, selected by the New York Times Cooking team for its layout, exemplifies the use of a concession-style window above the sink. This feature allows for a smooth transition from the prep area to the pool, complemented by an eat-in bar on the exterior side. Genevieve Ko, deputy editor at NYT Cooking, highlights this as a favorite spot for cookie enthusiasts.
Finally, content creator Rachel “Rocky” Barnes’s Los Angeles home features an outdoor bar adjacent to the kitchen. While not initially designed with her growing family in mind, this setup has proven ideal for casual children’s meals and for parents to supervise their children playing in the backyard. These examples underscore the versatility and appeal of extending kitchen spaces to the outdoors, offering enhanced functionality, natural light, and a stronger connection to the surrounding environment.
