This Living Room Before and After Features a 100-Year-Old Mantel

This article details the renovation journey of Tamlyn Willard's living room, transforming it from a dated space into a modern farmhouse aesthetic. Situated on a farm in Corral de Tierra, California, Willard and her husband purchased the house with the intention of renovating it, recognizing its good bones and potential despite its outdated finishes, particularly the retro fireplace mantel. Their goal was to imbue the 30-year-old home with the feel of a 100-year-old farmhouse. Willard shares several key tips for navigating a home renovation, drawing from her experience. The first tip emphasizes being prepared for temporary relocation. During the floor gutting process, her family, including her husband and two twin boys, temporarily moved into an Airstream on their property. While a full relocation was not feasible due to their farm with animals and gardens, this temporary living arrangement offered a unique experience. Another significant piece of advice is to find unexpected ways to save money. Willard actively sourced many materials independently, bypassing her contractor for certain items. For instance, she found reclaimed brick for the fireplace on Craigslist at a significantly lower cost than retail. The flooring represented another major saving; she used raw redwood planks, which she air-dried on her front porch before installing them herself, a method that initially concerned her contractor but ultimately yielded the desired look. The article also highlights the importance of flexibility and making quick decisions during a renovation. Willard recounts two major changes to her original plan. Initially, she intended to paint the fireplace white but shifted course upon discovering beautiful old salvaged bricks, choosing to preserve their natural appearance. Similarly, her initial plans for white or black painted floors evolved into applying a black transparent stain over the raw wood, realizing the impracticality of maintaining clean white floors. She advises making such significant changes early in the process to avoid issues with ordered materials or contractor schedules. Embracing DIY projects is another recommendation. Willard undertook the black hexagon tile design in front of the fireplace herself. Despite initial apprehension, she meticulously laid out the design, traced it, and used it as a template to cut through the wood floors. This personal involvement made the tiling more special. Furthermore, she advocates for scouring local yard sales and salvage yards for unique finds. Her living room's 100-year-old walnut mantel shelf was discovered in a salvage yard for a mere $300, requiring only sanding and sealing to restore. Finally, Willard emphasizes taking time to curate the perfect decor. She advises against rushing the final touches, acknowledging that creating a cohesive and personal look is an ongoing process. She stresses that in an online world where perfectly curated homes are constantly displayed, it is important to be patient and allow time for sourcing decor pieces that truly reflect one's style, ultimately resulting in a thoughtfully designed and personal space. #LivingRoomRenovation #ModernFarmhouse #DIYHomeImprovement #SalvagedMaterials #BudgetRenovation #HomeDesignTips #FireplaceRemodel #BeforeAndAfter #LivingRoomRenovation #ModernFarmhouse #DIYHomeImprovement #SalvagedMaterials #BudgetRenovation #HomeDesignTips #FireplaceRemodel #BeforeAndAfter
