5 reasons why you should never paint a ceiling white, reveals a leading paint and color expert

Ceilings are frequently overlooked in home design, often defaulted to white, despite being the largest single expanse of color in a room. Andy Greenall, Head of Design at Paint & Paper Library, challenges the traditional belief that white ceilings universally create brighter, lighter, and larger-looking rooms. He advocates for a re-evaluation of ceiling color choices, suggesting that strategic color application can profoundly impact a space's feel and aesthetic. Greenall provides five key reasons why moving beyond white ceilings can lead to more impactful and cohesive interior design. Firstly, white ceilings, when paired with bolder wall colors, do not necessarily create the illusion of more space. Instead, the sharp contrast draws the eye upwards, potentially emphasizing low ceilings. To create an illusion of space, Greenall suggests extending the wall color onto the ceiling, a technique known as color drenching. This approach, especially when applied to woodwork and skirting, creates an enveloping and cohesive atmosphere, making a room feel both impactful and cozy rather than visually compartmentalized. Secondly, white paint can diminish the visibility of architectural details such as beamed ceilings, ceiling trim, paneling, and decorative plasterwork. These features offer unique opportunities to add character and depth to a room. Greenall advises celebrating and highlighting these details with color, rather than allowing them to blend into a white expanse. For neutral wall schemes, a deeper, statement color on the ceiling can introduce sophistication. Alternatively, painting the trim, walls, and cornicing in the same color, with a slightly lighter tonal shade on the ceiling, can create a sense of height and added visual interest. Thirdly, creating exciting contrasts with ceiling colors can significantly enhance a room's design. This method allows for creative expression, whether it's highlighting a specific architectural element or creating a design feature with a stripe or block of contrasting color. This technique can be employed to form a color-block canopy over a bed or to zone distinct areas within a larger living space, adding a layer of visual dynamism that white ceilings typically lack. Fourthly, extending the ceiling color downwards, rather than stopping abruptly at the ceiling line, can effectively make rooms feel taller. Greenall recommends bringing the ceiling color down to a picture rail or even creating the illusion of a picture rail by stopping the ceiling color at that height. This strategy works to visually elongate the walls, contributing to a sense of increased vertical space and seamlessly integrating the ceiling into the overall room design. Finally, the sheen level of the paint chosen for the ceiling plays a crucial role in the room's ambiance and how light interacts within the space. A matte finish will offer a velvety, chalky appearance that absorbs light, creating a softer, more intimate feel. In contrast, a high-sheen finish will reflect light, producing a dramatic, lacquer-like effect that can make a room feel more expansive and vibrant. The choice of sheen can either enhance the coziness of a room or contribute to its brightness and perceived size, depending on the desired outcome and the specific characteristics of the space. While white ceilings can contribute to a bright and airy feel, especially when paired with white walls, they can also appear stark. In rooms with lower ceilings, a harmonious color scheme between walls and ceiling can be more effective in creating a sense of spaciousness and warmth than a contrasting white ceiling. #CeilingPaint #InteriorDesign #ColorTheory #HomeDecor #PaintAndPaperLibrary #ArchitecturalFeatures #RoomTransformation #PaintFinishes #CeilingPaint #InteriorDesign #ColorTheory #HomeDecor #PaintAndPaperLibrary #ArchitecturalFeatures #RoomTransformation #PaintFinishes
