An exclusive preview of Quintessential Kitchens and Collaborations by Matthew Quinn: Volume Three
This article offers an exclusive preview of "Quintessential Kitchens and Collaborations by Matthew Quinn: Volume Three," the latest book by acclaimed kitchen, bath, and product designer Matthew Quinn. The book, set for release this month, showcases 16 diverse projects spanning kitchens, bathrooms, dressing rooms, and other specialized areas within various client homes. It serves as a visual anthology of design inspiration, emphasizing the significant outcomes achieved through collaborative efforts among leading professionals in the design industry.
The featured projects exhibit a wide array of styles, from enduring classical aesthetics to contemporary, cutting-edge designs. These include luxurious high-rise residences, serene waterfront properties, secluded retreats, and comfortable second homes. The publication highlights the intrinsic beauty that emerges when functionality and form are meticulously integrated, a hallmark of successful design partnerships. One particular case study details a family home characterized by a predominantly white interior, complemented by striking contrasts of black, brown, and gray tones, alongside shimmering metallic accents. The interior design achieves an emotional balance through elements such as black-metal-and-glass windows, architectural cabinetry, timeless quartzite, distinctive decorative tiles, artisanal hardware, and a variety of luminous light fixtures in advanced configurations. Luxurious furnishings and inspiring artwork further enhance the space, contributing to an overarching sense of well-being. The design prioritizes the creation of environments where both adults and children can thrive, balancing beauty, function, and opportunities for play.
The article recounts a specific client's journey to realizing a dream kitchen, inspired by the cover of Quinn's second book. The client, who had lived in their home for two decades, sought a "Matthew Quinn kitchen" with a vision influenced by the book's unforgettable blue hues and the showcased kitchen's beauty. This project, which involved the client and her two daughters—one a chef—underscores the kitchen's role as a vibrant space for culinary artistry and social engagement, reminiscent of how an artfully designed book can evoke warmth, comfort, and inspiring beauty. This narrative illustrates the transformative power of design inspiration found in books and the fulfillment of long-held design aspirations.
Another project involves the redesign of a French-inspired house, originally debuted as the 2005 Atlanta Symphony Associates’ Decorators’ Show House & Gardens. Quinn had previously designed the kitchen and butler's pantry for this home, which became widely published. Nearly two decades later, he was tasked with reimagining these spaces for new owners, a client with a preference for modern interiors. The original design featured a deep French-gray palette with Calacutta Viola marble, known for its teal blue, merlot, and gold veining, creating an artistically timeless space. The new design for the current owners skillfully blends their modern aesthetic with the home’s traditional architecture and elaborate stone details. The design process began with inspiration drawn from another client's home, appealing to the new owners' appreciation for clean lines and sleek cabinetry wood grain, demonstrating their keen eye for design and fine art.
