Celebrity designers reveal the kitchen design rules they live by
This article explores the kitchen design philosophies and personal preferences of three celebrated designers: Marc Newson, Ashiesh Shah, and Martyn Lawrence Bullard. Each designer offers insights into the creation of their own kitchens, highlighting aesthetic choices, functional considerations, and memorable experiences within these spaces.
Marc Newson's London home features a spacious, open-plan kitchen characterized by celadon-green lacquered cabinetry that conceals appliances and showcases artwork by his daughters. His design approach was instinctive, prioritizing marble worktops and an island shape for functionality. Newson integrated many of his own designs into the kitchen, including a hob and oven for Smeg, a dish doctor for Magis, a kettle and toaster for Sunbeam, and cutlery, china, and glasses for Alessi, Noritake, and Iittala, respectively. He also appreciates the Green Star juicer and considers a sharp Japanese knife an indispensable tool. His culinary specialties include Vegemite soldiers and Thai curry.
Ashiesh Shah's Mumbai home boasts an open kitchen designed as an interactive space overlooking the living room. This design choice fosters a more social and inclusive environment for entertaining, allowing guests to gather around the kitchen area. The kitchen itself features a marble-top table, brass-clad cabinets, and hidden drawers, reflecting an overarching American-style aesthetic with a touch of glamour. Shah emphasizes the importance of selecting art pieces that are durable and easy to clean for the kitchen, suggesting framed photographs or sculptures. His favorite kitchen tool is the oven, owing to his sweet tooth, and he is known for his avocado salad.
Martyn Lawrence Bullard's Los Angeles kitchen in his Whitley Heights home is a Mediterranean-style space that blends old Hollywood romance with an authentic Spanish Mediterranean flavor. The design process took approximately three months, aiming to evoke a 1920s aesthetic with a La Cornue stove and integrated appliances such as dishwashers, refrigerator drawers, and ovens. The flooring comprises reclaimed 19th-century Italian tiles, and the walls are roughly plastered to create an aged and atmospheric feel. Bullard's most cherished memory in his kitchen involves chef Wolfgang Puck cooking dinner for him. His essential kitchen item is a Nespresso coffee maker, and he prides himself on making an excellent spaghetti bolognese, a recipe passed down from his Italian mother.
Across these distinct design approaches, common themes emerge: the integration of personal style, the importance of both aesthetics and functionality, and the creation of spaces that facilitate enjoyable experiences, whether through family meals, entertaining guests, or daily rituals. The designers' choices in materials, appliances, and layout reflect their individual tastes while also offering practical solutions for a well-utilized kitchen. This exploration provides a glimpse into the thoughtful considerations behind high-end kitchen design.
