Bathroom subway tile ideas - designers are updating this classic decor style

Subway tiles, also known as metro tiles, are experiencing a resurgence in popularity within bathroom design, moving beyond their traditional white, brick-style appearance. Originating from early 20th-century underground and subway stations, these tiles possess a timeless utilitarian style, yet their application has evolved to fit modern aesthetics. Designers emphasize the versatility of subway tiles, highlighting their ability to appear both contemporary and classic depending on their styling. One key aspect of updating subway tiles is the coordination of grout color. Using a grey or off-white grout, for instance, can seamlessly integrate pale pink subway tiles with concrete-effect floor tiles in a walk-in shower, creating a cohesive and polished look. This choice of grout not only enhances the overall aesthetic but also offers increased durability compared to traditional white grout. Another contemporary approach involves pairing dark-toned subway tiles with rich materials. Vertically laid forest green subway tiles, for example, combined with nero marquina marble and brushed brassware, evoke a sense of decadence and modernity. The laying pattern of subway tiles is also crucial; a horizontal herringbone pattern can make a room feel wider, while a vertical brick bond can make ceilings appear higher. This flexibility in arrangement allows for individualized flair in bathroom design. For a more authentic appeal, the addition of dado and skirting tiles can transform even bold black subway tiles. These traditional moulding tiles, placed at dado height and as a skirting tile, create a refined separation between wall and floor, making them suitable even for small bathrooms. Mixing plain and patterned tiles is another effective strategy for creating impact. Tiling an entire wall with bold blue subway tiles, rather than just a section, combined with a corresponding eye-catching patterned floor, can create a striking bathroom aesthetic. When selecting tiles, it's advisable to maintain a similar color palette for both walls and floors to ensure cohesion. Testing samples in situ is recommended to observe how lighting conditions affect color and how tiles appear in smaller spaces. Furthermore, considering how tiles interact with other elements like taps, light fittings, and towels is essential for a harmonious design. The article also suggests mixing gloss and matte tiles for a subtle textural pattern. Basketweave patterns for colored subway tiles, coupled with darker toned grout in the same color family, offer a fresh and modern look, particularly when combined with brushed brassware and curved silhouettes. Embellishing with a border can add a decorative element and help frame the scheme, especially with colorful, metallic, or glass subway tiles. For a graphic style, subway tiles can be laid in a herringbone pattern with grey grout and paired with geometric, monochrome floor tiles. Repeating the floor tiles in alcove shelves and incorporating black brassware and crittal-style shower screens further enhances this bold aesthetic. While colored and patterned tiles are trending, classic white subway tiles remain a viable option, offering flexibility for future updates through paint. When using white tiles, it is recommended to introduce bold colors on walls and floors to create atmosphere and warmth. Lastly, carrara marble-look finishes provide a luxurious alternative for those who prefer a neutral yet sophisticated aesthetic without committing to bold colors, complementing natural stone-look styles and various brassware finishes. However, traditional subway tiles are generally unsuitable for shower floors due to their delicate glazed surfaces, though subway-style marble tiles can be used for flooring. #BathroomDesign #SubwayTiles #TileTrends #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #GroutSelection #TileLayingPatterns #ModernBathroom #DesignTips #BathroomDesign #SubwayTiles #TileTrends #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #GroutSelection #TileLayingPatterns #ModernBathroom #DesignTips
