Adultify Your College-Era IKEA Bed Frame With This Headboard Hack

The article details a DIY project by Los Angeles-based freelance creative director Ali LaBelle, who transformed her college-era IKEA bed frame into a more sophisticated piece. LaBelle, like many young adults, purchased essential furniture from IKEA after college, including a queen-size bed frame. A decade later, while slowly upgrading her furniture collection with more meaningful items, she wasn't ready to replace her bed frame due to ongoing savings for a dream bed. The frame, though semi-falling apart, offered a sturdy base for a creative solution. The inspiration for this headboard hack came from a guest room at London’s Ned hotel, where beds featured foam pillows tied to the frames. LaBelle was drawn to this idea as a way to soften the frame's appearance, introduce a new pattern, and add texture to her bedroom. With the assistance of her interior designer mother, she embarked on customizing her IKEA bed to better suit her adult-approved living space. The fabric selection was a crucial step in the transformation. LaBelle found inspiration from a collection of Heather Taylor Home napkins she had acquired during a sample sale. She admired the fabric's aesthetic and discovered that Heather Taylor Home also sold handwoven tablecloths, which were coincidentally large enough to cover the cushion she envisioned for her headboard. She chose the 'Milos' pattern, a thick stripe, priced at $198, appreciating the serendipitous alignment of her fabric desire and the product availability. For the cushion itself, LaBelle used 1-inch-thick foam batting, cut to the precise dimensions of her headboard. This foam was then wrapped tightly in quilt batting and secured with hot glue to ensure a smooth, lump-free surface. Next, two rectangles of the chosen Heather Taylor Home fabric were cut. Her mother then took on the task of sewing the top and sides of the fabric cover. Crucially, three ties were incorporated into the design, allowing the cushion to be securely attached to the bed frame's rungs. A key practical consideration for LaBelle was the ability to clean the cushion. To address this, her mother ingeniously left the bottom seam of the fabric cover open, creating a removable design. Small ties inside secure the batting, and once the cushion is in place, these ties are discreetly hidden behind the mattress. This design ensures that the entire cover can be easily removed and machine-washed, making maintenance simple. LaBelle expressed satisfaction with the final result, noting its clean appearance and avoiding the significant expense often associated with bolstered headboards. The project successfully transitioned her bed from a college-dorm aesthetic to a more sophisticated look with a subtle touch of pattern. #IKEAHack #DIYHomeDecor #HeadboardDesign #BedroomRenovation #FabricSelection #HomeImprovement #InteriorDesign #BudgetDecor #Adulting #IKEAHack #DIYHomeDecor #HeadboardDesign #BedroomRenovation #FabricSelection #HomeImprovement #InteriorDesign #BudgetDecor #Adulting
