Get In on the Wavy Headboard Trend With This $275 DIY

This article details a DIY project to create a wavy headboard, inspired by a more expensive ready-made option, for an affordable $275. The project was conceived by DIY enthusiast Luke Arthur Wells for his sister and her fiancé, Shannan Wells and Jamie Allen, who were looking to transform their bedroom into a serene space before the arrival of their daughter. Despite living in different locations (Luke in Essex and his family in Hertfordshire, U.K.), the family successfully followed Luke's instructions via FaceTime during quarantine to construct the headboard. The project begins with obtaining a piece of 1/2-inch-thick MDF that is slightly taller and wider than the existing headboard. The first step involves shaping the MDF. The couple determined the desired height for the headboard's wave, ensuring it would not dip below their pillows. They then freehanded an undulating shape onto the MDF above this mark. Using a jigsaw, they carefully cut out the wavy design and drilled holes in the bottom corners of the board to facilitate attachment to their bed frame. Following the shaping of the MDF, the next stage focuses on padding. Two yards of batting are needed. The trimmed MDF is placed on top of the batting, and the padding is cut to size, leaving a 2-inch halo around the perimeter. This excess batting is then folded over the edges of the headboard and pulled taut before being stapled to the back, with staples placed approximately every inch to secure it firmly in place. The third step involves upholstering the headboard with fabric. Two yards of upholstery fabric, specifically Mark Alexander Coda bouclé, were used for this project. The process of applying the fabric mirrors that of the batting: the headboard, already padded, is placed on the fabric, and the fabric is cut, leaving a margin around the edges. To ensure a smooth finish around the curves of the wavy design, small slits are made in the textile before wrapping it around the headboard and stapling it to the back. Finally, the newly created headboard is attached to the existing bed frame using the original screws. To complete the look, two shapely geometric pillows were added, complementing the new headboard. Luke Arthur Wells expressed satisfaction, noting that the transformed bedroom now serves as a perfect relaxing space for his sister, who is a new mother. #DIYHeadboard #WavyHeadboard #BedroomDesign #HomeRenovation #AffordableDecor #InteriorDesign #DIYProject #Upholstery #HomeDecor #DIYHeadboard #WavyHeadboard #BedroomDesign #HomeRenovation #AffordableDecor #InteriorDesign #DIYProject #Upholstery #HomeDecor
