Studiomama uses adaptable furniture to create what might be London’s smallest house

Studiomama, led by co-founders Nina Tolstrup and Jack Mama, has transformed a mere 13-square-meter former mini-cab office in north London into a highly functional and comfortable micro-home. This project, known as the 13 Square Metre House, challenges conventional notions of living space by demonstrating how adaptable furniture and thoughtful design can optimize extremely compact environments. The designers drew inspiration from the efficient layouts found in caravans and boats, aiming to create a flexible living space that feels significantly larger than its actual footprint. The core of the design revolves around custom-made plywood furniture units that are seamlessly integrated along the perimeter of the triangular-shaped residence. Each unit serves multiple purposes, accommodating a bed, a workspace, lounge seating, a kitchen, a bathroom, closet storage, and a dining area. Tolstrup emphasized the necessity for bespoke solutions in such a tiny space, stating that off-the-shelf furniture would not be suitable. The consistent use of plywood throughout the interior unifies the floor, walls, and ceiling, contributing to a cohesive and warm, cabin-like aesthetic. To enhance the perception of space, mirrors are strategically placed on opposing walls, including one above the kitchen counter, to extend sight lines. The angled front wall features two large windows that provide natural light and connect the interior with the street. Beneath one of these windows, a dining table is flanked by benches. These benches incorporate flaps that can be extended for additional seating, and they are topped with pink cushions that also extend up the backrests, concealing integrated storage compartments. Another bench with pink cushions is built into the opposite wall, complete with a footrest. Further demonstrating ingenious space utilization, sliding doors in pastel shades of yellow, pink, and blue conceal various shelving units. These cabinets are meticulously designed for specific items, such as a sewing machine, games, spice jars, wine, and books. One of these doors opens to reveal a small pull-out desk, allowing for standing work, with dedicated storage for a laptop and technical equipment. The designers aimed for an intuitive and non-electronic approach to the multi-functional elements, ensuring ease of use. The bed is positioned at the narrowest section of the room and is designed to fold up when not in use, liberating floor space. When lowered, it reveals two slim bookshelves and a bedside table. The kitchen occupies the other end of the main living area, with tall cabinets flanking the small entrance hall. The only entirely separate room in the house is the bathroom, located behind this kitchen wall. Studiomama initially showcased the 13 Square Metre House concept as an installation at the Viaduct showroom during the London Design Festival, illustrating the practicalities of micro-living. Tolstrup highlighted the increasing importance of compact living solutions in response to global trends of urbanization and the growth of megacities. The project serves as a practical inquiry into the essential requirements for comfortable living, showcasing how innovative design can address the challenges of limited space. The project reflects a broader trend in design, where architects and designers are developing furniture and systems that maximize every available inch of space, from floors to ceilings, to cater to the growing demand for efficient small-home living solutions. #Studiomama #MicroHome #LondonArchitecture #SpaceSavingFurniture #PlywoodInterior #FlexibleLiving #CompactDesign #NinaTolstrup #JackMama #Studiomama #MicroHome #LondonArchitecture #SpaceSavingFurniture #PlywoodInterior #FlexibleLiving #CompactDesign #NinaTolstrup #JackMama
