Have broken-plan kitchens replaced open-plan? This is how to get on board with the new trend

The concept of broken-plan kitchens is emerging as a significant trend, redefining the functionality and aesthetic of the most used room in the house. This shift is presented as an alternative to the once-dominant open-plan kitchen, with bespoke kitchen designer Tom Howley attributing its rise in popularity to recent lifestyle changes, particularly the increased time spent at home. The contemporary kitchen now serves multiple purposes beyond cooking, acting as a workspace, classroom, and social hub. Broken-plan kitchens maintain the spacious feel of an open-plan design but introduce distinct zones through the strategic use of screens, freestanding furniture, and shelving. These elements create defined areas for cooking, relaxing, or entertaining, offering both openness and the option for privacy. Annie Tullett, a Home Designer at Neptune Hove, supports this trend, noting a 57% increase in searches for broken-plan layouts. She highlights the appeal of having the best of both worlds: sociability and privacy, which can be achieved even in existing spaces that might not accommodate a fully open-plan design. Architectural features like Crittall-style windows, half-walls, or open floor-to-ceiling shelving are suggested as ways to add visual interest while maintaining flow and offering a sense of seclusion when desired. For those considering this kitchen style, several design rules are emphasized. Firstly, careful consideration of appliances is crucial. Tom Howley advises paying attention to potential noises from fridges and dishwashers, and selecting an extractor fan appropriate for the room's size. He also recommends fitting built-under appliances to maximize workspace and maintain an uninterrupted eye-level view across the kitchen, cautioning against sacrificing worktop space for large items like American-style fridge-freezers or tall pantries. Secondly, the design must align with the inhabitants' lifestyle. The past year has highlighted the need for kitchens to be durable and multifunctional. While open-plan kitchens were traditionally social spaces, often centered around an island, the broken-plan concept expands this functionality to include various social elements beyond just cooking and eating. A wide island counter or baker's table with textural barstools is suggested as a welcoming gathering place. Finally, creating a cohesive layout is paramount. The article underscores that the advantages of broken-plan design, particularly its versatility, will extend beyond immediate circumstances. The layout should incorporate multi-functionality in both physical arrangement and lighting schemes to establish distinct zones that can be used simultaneously or individually. A practical tip includes ensuring that seating around the kitchen island does not obstruct access to essential areas like the stovetop, fridge, or drinks cabinet. This thoughtful planning allows the host to move freely while cooking and serving, without interfering with guests. #BrokenPlanKitchen #KitchenDesign #InteriorDesignTrends #HomeRenovation #ZonedLiving #KitchenLayout #HomeOfficeIntegration #ModernKitchen #BrokenPlanKitchen #KitchenDesign #InteriorDesignTrends #HomeRenovation #ZonedLiving #KitchenLayout #HomeOfficeIntegration #ModernKitchen
