A former hoarding technician shares the best tips for cleaning wood floors and carpets

Fiona Mills, a former hoarding technician and current franchise business coach at Spaulding Decon, provides practical advice for cleaning and maintaining both wood floors and carpets. Mills emphasizes the importance of regular cleaning for carpets, recommending a thorough cleaning at least once a year, or every six months for homes with high traffic or pets. Hardwood floors, she advises, should be cleaned quarterly or every other month. For wood floors, Mills suggests using common household items to address various issues. To remove stains, a paste made from table salt and baking soda with lemon oil can be effective. The salt is first applied to absorb the stain for 10 to 15 minutes, followed by rubbing the baking soda and lemon oil paste. Alternatively, white vinegar on a paper towel can also help lift stains. Mills cautions against using high concentrations of hydrogen peroxide on wood floors due to its bleaching properties. For scratches on wood floors, Mills recommends applying a mixture of baking soda and a few drops of olive oil, letting it sit for five minutes, and then gently buffing it out with a sponge before cleaning with a damp cloth. She also mentions Bona Floor Cleaner as another viable option. Addressing water damage on wood floors, Mills distinguishes between light and dark water stains. Light water stains, which affect only the surface finish, can be treated by rubbing mineral oil or lemon oil into the affected area and allowing it to sit for 24 hours. Dark water stains, which penetrate deeper and may indicate mold growth, require a more intensive approach. This involves buffing or sanding the area, vacuuming, and then applying a cloth soaked in equal parts hydrogen peroxide and water for 10 minutes. After drying, the area should be refinished. For faded wood from age and high traffic, Mills suggests sanding, buffing, and refinishing the floor for restoration. For carpets, Mills highlights the efficacy of rubbing alcohol for removing paint and marker stains, presenting it as a cost-effective alternative to commercial stain removers like Shout Stain Removers. She also offers an unconventional but effective tip for red wine stains: applying white wine. This method works by diluting the red wine's concentration, similar to how cold water would, making the stain easier to remove. #HomeCleaning #WoodFloorCare #CarpetCleaning #StainRemoval #DIYCleaning #HouseholdTips #FloorMaintenance #CleaningHacks #HomeCleaning #WoodFloorCare #CarpetCleaning #StainRemoval #DIYCleaning #HouseholdTips #FloorMaintenance #CleaningHacks
