Product watch: Carioca by Granote brings colourful new meaning to walls
Carioca, a cork tile concept designed by Italian interior designer Marco Carini for Granorte, offers a vibrant and sustainable solution for wall coverings. The product aims to redefine wall aesthetics through bold colors and innovative design. Crafted in Portugal from cork sourced from protected forests, Carioca tiles utilize recycled waste from the wine stopper industry, highlighting a commitment to environmental responsibility. Each tile in the Carioca collection is available in two extra-large formats, 900 x 150mm and 900 x 300mm, providing flexibility for diverse design applications. The range features 15 distinct shades, including Bluemoon, Dove Blue, Forest, Terracotta, Saffron, Purple, Blush, and Pearl, offering a wide palette for interior designers. In addition to monochrome options, Carioca provides eight multi-color designs, meticulously coordinated to complement the solid hues. A distinguishing feature of these tiles is their machined edge, which creates a pronounced, thick join. This design element intentionally reveals the almost-black cork base layer, adding significant depth and visual interest to the installed wall. The collection seamlessly merges a modern, graphic sensibility with cork's inherent natural aesthetic, injecting energy and liveliness into contemporary surfaces. Beyond its visual appeal, Carioca delivers practical benefits. Being FSC-certified, the cork tiles leverage the material's natural properties for improved indoor environments. Cork is known for its excellent sound absorption qualities, contributing to better acoustics within a space. Furthermore, its thermal regulation benefits enhance energy performance, helping to maintain stable indoor temperatures. The tiles are finished with a water-based Aquadur® matt coating, which provides resistance against marks and simplifies maintenance, ensuring the product's longevity and ease of care in commercial settings. Paulo Rocha, Product and R&D Manager at Granorte, emphasizes that Carioca's innovation lies in its blend of modern graphic design and natural materials, offering a more sustainable alternative to synthetic surfaces. He highlights Carini's skillful integration of bold colors and strong graphic lines with the unique beauty of cork, resulting in a powerful and captivating aesthetic. Granorte positions Carioca as an example of its ongoing effort to expand the possibilities of cork as a material. The product is natural, renewable, recyclable, biodegradable, PVC-free, and lightweight, while simultaneously delivering high performance and striking visual appeal. This collection represents a significant step in utilizing cork's ecological and functional attributes for modern interior design.
