I Tried Installing Peel-and-Stick Floor Tiling in Two Different Rooms—Here Are My Thoughts
The author shares their experience installing Chasing Paper's peel-and-stick floor tiles in their kitchen and bathroom. The article highlights the appeal of low-lift home upgrades that don't require professional assistance. Chasing Paper, a brand initially known for its peel-and-stick wallpaper, has expanded its product line to include flooring, offering over 30 patterns such as speckled quartz, granite, subway tile, and marble. These water-resistant adhesive vinyl floor tiles are laminated with a top coat to prevent fading and stains. The brand recommends using these tiles on smooth, non-textured surfaces like ceramic tile or sealed wood.
For installation, essential tools include a broom or vacuum, mop, utility knife, scissors or razor blade, squeegee or smoothing tool, felt discs, and patience. The author chose the Dark Terrazzo pattern for their kitchen and Watercolor for their bathroom, opting for 2'x4' panels over 12"x12" squares to minimize seams and better cover existing larger tiles. The installation process began in the kitchen, requiring furniture removal, thorough cleaning of the floors, and laying out panels to plan cuts. The author encountered a setback in the kitchen when they slid metal furniture across the newly installed tiles without using felt pads, resulting in streaks despite the brand's recommendation to use floor pads. This highlighted the importance of adhering to installation guidelines.
Learning from the kitchen experience, the author proceeded with the bathroom installation, finding it simpler due to the compact space and the precision offered by a razor blade for navigating awkward angles around the vanity and toilet. The final look of the bathroom was praised, noting the tiles were neither shiny nor slippery, giving the space a brand-new appearance. Post-installation, the author expresses satisfaction with the bathroom tiles, reiterating that while they are water-resistant, they are not waterproof, necessitating quick cleanup of spills to prevent potential lifting. For cleaning, Chasing Paper suggests a damp mop and bleach-free cleaning solutions to preserve the tiles' color.
Conversely, the kitchen installation presented more challenges due to its high-traffic nature and frequent water exposure from cooking and dishwashing, which could potentially compromise the tiles' quality over time if consistently oversaturated. However, the author concludes that for homes with less intense kitchen activity or for those looking for a temporary yet stylish update during renovations, these peel-and-stick tiles offer a worthwhile and low-commitment solution for personalizing a space.
