I Was Dead Set On Stone Floors—Until I Saw These Options

The author recounts her ongoing kitchen renovation project in a 95-year-old colonial home, detailing the progress made over the past year. Initially, the renovation involved repainting walls, refinishing oak cabinets in a two-tone scheme, retrofitting cabinetry for a dishwasher, and adding a secondhand hutch. The primary remaining task is replacing the outdated vinyl flooring in the kitchen, which dates back to the 1970s. The existing vinyl flooring features a rosy, repetitive brick basket weave pattern that the author describes as kitschy and less appealing than modern luxury vinyl plank (LVP) options. The seams of the current flooring are peeling, and paint drips from previous DIY projects further detract from its appearance. Faced with the need for durable and moisture-resistant flooring suitable for high foot traffic from two entrances, the author decides to seek professional assistance rather than handling the project as a DIY task. She plans to consult Empire Today, a company recognized for its end-to-end flooring solutions. The author highlights Empire Today's virtual floor designer tool as a significant aid in visualizing potential flooring options. By uploading photos of her kitchen, she could explore nearly 100 different choices, filtering them by color, shade, product type (e.g., porcelain and ceramic tile), and product line (e.g., tile flooring). The virtual tool broadened her perspective beyond her initial preference for porcelain or ceramic tile. While she considered options like Tundra Stone in Meadow, which offered a marble-like veining and a creamy ivory tone, she was surprised to find herself drawn to wood-look vinyl plank options. The Astoria in Cafe, a wood-look vinyl plank, particularly caught her attention due to its 100% waterproofing and thicker-than-average wear layer, making it ideal for a busy kitchen. The tool also allowed her to experiment with the plank orientation, demonstrating how rotating the planks could create a more intentional design, even though they were wider than the existing wood flooring in other parts of the house. Another appealing LVP option was Knoll Creek in Hilltop, which features AquaDefense technology for protection against spills and plumbing leaks, and an aluminum oxide topcoat for resistance to scratches and UV fading. This option presents a realistic wood grain that strikes a balance between light and dark wood tones. The author expresses interest in seeing a sample of this particular flooring in person, indicating her next step would be to schedule an appointment with Empire Today. The article concludes with the author's decision-making process, emphasizing the usefulness of the tool's 'Compare' function for viewing options side-by-side and facilitating design discussions with her husband. The couple ultimately leaned towards Knoll Creek in its Hilltop colorway, and the author has incorporated these design ideas into her mood boards. #KitchenRemodeling #Flooring #HomeRenovation #DIYProject #InteriorDesign #VinylPlankFlooring #TileFlooring #EmpireToday #KitchenRemodeling #Flooring #HomeRenovation #DIYProject #InteriorDesign #VinylPlankFlooring #TileFlooring #EmpireToday
