The Old Cabinets Stayed in This Historic Townhouse Renovation—Just Not in the Kitchen

This article details the renovation of a historic Brooklyn townhouse owned by Jenny O’Leary, an architect, and Adam Bossy, led by contractor Erica Padgett of Decorum Design Build. The project, described as challenging due to the home's mid-1800s origins, focused on preserving original details while integrating modern amenities. A key aspect of the renovation was transforming a second-level office/bedroom into an en suite bathroom with a freestanding tub, a complex task given the kitchen's plaster ceiling medallion directly below. Padgett employed "creative plumbing" to achieve this, highlighting the clients' clear vision for their home. A notable example of preservation and repurposing involved the kitchen's original pantry cabinet. Instead of discarding it, Padgett's team carefully disassembled the unit, which came apart in approximately 40 pieces. These pieces were then moved upstairs and reassembled with minor modifications to create a double bathroom vanity, complete with space for mirrors and a stone countertop. This meticulous reconstruction, though costly, yielded a pleasant surprise: during its removal, leaflets dating back to the 1870s were discovered within the cracks of the original unit, offering a tangible connection to the home's history. While the renovation prioritized salvaging historic elements, O’Leary adopted a pragmatic approach to change. She balanced preservation with modern updates, exemplified by painting the entryway woodwork glossy black and installing graphic tiles from Barber & Osgerby. Another instance of adapting to modern comfort involved installing a polished nickel ceiling fan in the living room, which necessitated careful integration into a plaster medallion on the ceiling, a process that reportedly caused some anxiety for the homeowners due to the delicate nature of the original structure. The kitchen renovation presented its own set of logistical challenges, particularly concerning lead times for custom orders. The Reform cabinets, ordered in November 2020, were installed nearly a year later. Similarly, Thermador appliances ordered the previous fall arrived in June 2021, with the vent hood initially missing. A significant mishap occurred when the island countertop arrived in an incorrect color, showing up as traditional gray instead of the requested black concrete, indicating the rarity of their specific custom order. Another major hurdle was encountered during the primary bathroom renovation. After reframing the sagging extension that housed the bathroom, exciting new elements like tadelakt plaster and a reeded glass shower door were introduced. The selection of a terrazzo tub from France & Son, estimated to weigh around 450 pounds, proved problematic. Upon arrival, the tub was found to be severely cracked, leading to the difficult decision to scrap it due to the traumatic experience of attempting its installation. Ultimately, a more manageable 111-pound tub from West Elm was installed. The homeowners, despite the challenges and emotional rollercoaster of renovating an old home, expressed satisfaction with the final outcome. #TownhouseRenovation #HistoricPreservation #KitchenRemodel #BathroomDesign #RepurposedFurniture #PlumbingChallenges #DesignInspiration #GreenpointBrooklyn #TownhouseRenovation #HistoricPreservation #KitchenRemodel #BathroomDesign #RepurposedFurniture #PlumbingChallenges #DesignInspiration #GreenpointBrooklyn
