Stop! Step Away From the Paintbrush — Here's 4 Things Interior Designers Would Never, Ever Paint Around the Home

The practice of painting furniture and decor has become increasingly popular for personalizing home interiors. However, interior designers caution against painting certain surfaces and materials, as it can lead to durability issues, aesthetic problems, and ultimately, higher costs than initial replacement or refacing. This article identifies four specific areas where painting is generally ill-advised: thermofoil or melamine cabinets, tiles (especially on floors and backsplashes), countertops, and antique woods. Thermofoil and melamine cabinets are designed to be non-porous, resisting stains and moisture. These properties, while beneficial for their intended use, make them unsuitable for long-term paint adhesion. Even with thorough sanding and specialized primers, paint on these materials is prone to chipping, peeling, and scratching, particularly on edges and corners. Interior designer Terri Brien emphasizes that attempting to paint such cabinets can result in a short-lived finish and ultimately necessitate costly repairs or replacement, advising against painting these materials altogether. Painting tiles, particularly those on floors and kitchen backsplashes, is also strongly discouraged due to high wear and tear. Tiles in these areas are constantly subjected to foot traffic, cleaning, and cooking-related splashes. While DIY tile painting might appear appealing online, it often proves to be an impractical and non-durable solution in real-world living conditions. Terri Brien notes that paint on tiles will inevitably wear off, especially in high-traffic zones or near cooking areas, leading to an uneven and unappealing appearance. Instead of painting, deep cleaning, re-grouting, or replacing tiles are recommended for a lasting finish. For those seeking creative alternatives, experimenting with custom tile designs or colorful grout is suggested. Countertops, similar to tiles, are subjected to daily use and various forms of wear, making them poor candidates for painting. Interior designer Terri Brien states that painted countertops, whether in kitchens or bathrooms, typically look good only on the first day. The extensive preparation work, potential for topcoats to yellow over time, and the inevitable marks from daily activities like sliding plates or placing warm pans, make painted countertops an unsustainable solution. The recommendation is to reserve painting for less frequently used decorative surfaces such as side tables, desks, or floating shelves, where maintenance is less demanding. Finally, painting high-quality wood furniture, especially antique or heirloom pieces, is generally advised against. Such pieces often hold significant value and character in their natural state. Wood develops a beautiful patina over time and can be restored through refinishing, oiling, or staining to highlight its natural grain. Painting these pieces not only diminishes their original value but also makes reversal of the process difficult, messy, and potentially damaging. However, decorative artist Tess Newall offers a nuanced perspective, suggesting that smaller hand-painted trims or motifs can enhance antique and thrifted wooden pieces, adding a new chapter to their story without completely obscuring their original character. She advocates for building layers of color washes to celebrate the existing patina while introducing decorative details. The overarching advice from designers is to carefully consider the long-term implications and suitability of materials before undertaking any painting project, prioritizing durability and aesthetic integrity. #InteriorDesign #HomeImprovement #PaintTips #DIYHome #Cabinetry #TilePainting #CountertopRenovation #AntiqueFurniture #HomeDecor #InteriorDesign #HomeImprovement #PaintTips #DIYHome #Cabinetry #TilePainting #CountertopRenovation #AntiqueFurniture #HomeDecor
