Who Says Gallery Walls and Shelves Can’t Coexist Harmoniously?

The redecoration of a Georgian house in York, England, features an innovative solution for combining art displays and shelving. Inspired by an image of cubicle shelves framing art, Lisa Dawson, the homeowner and writer, embarked on a DIY project to transform her dining room wall. Her dining room, characterized by its square shape and multiple doors, posed a challenge for traditional decoration. Dawson decided to replace existing floating shelves with a custom-built gallery wall that integrates both art and decorative objects. The project began with careful planning, involving a builder who simplified the initial concept. Dawson and the builder sketched a rectangle on grid paper, dividing it into sections for the cubicles. While she did not pre-plan all the art, she knew she wanted to prominently feature three significant pieces: a Harland Miller 'York' print, a portrait by Benjamin Miller, and a collage by Sharon Walters. These pieces formed the anchor of her display, around which she would arrange other items. The construction process spanned four days. The shelves were crafted from moisture-resistant MDF and securely attached to the wall using batons, screws, and glue. After installation, the entire structure was prepared with primer and then painted with three coats of Sanderson Snowy Owl, matching the existing wall and ceiling color. Dawson retrospectively suggested painting the boards before installation to streamline the process. She noted that while the materials were cost-effective, hiring professional help for design and installation could increase the overall expense of such a project. Following the structural completion, Dawson began the decoration phase. She strategically placed her three main art pieces and then, through a process of trial and error, filled the remaining cubicles. Her aim was to ensure adequate spacing between items and to incorporate objects with personal significance. This included beach treasures collected during family holidays, items found in thrift shops, and pieces from her extensive colored glass collection, which she continually expands. The finished display reflects a curated collection of meaningful objects and art. The newly installed shelf-gallery wall has successfully revitalized Dawson's dining room. It not only provides a unique aesthetic but also enhances the room's perception of height. Dawson expressed satisfaction with the outcome, considering it a positive experience to create something unconventional and personally fulfilling, effectively bringing to life the inspirational image she had cherished for years. This project serves as a testament to the harmonious coexistence of gallery walls and functional shelving, offering a personalized and elevated approach to interior decoration. #GalleryWall #ShelfDesign #HomeDecor #DIYProject #DiningRoom #InteriorDesign #ArtDisplay #CustomShelving #HomeRenovation #GalleryWall #ShelfDesign #HomeDecor #DIYProject #DiningRoom #InteriorDesign #ArtDisplay #CustomShelving #HomeRenovation
