Malone Studio glass artists keep Newport windows looking their best

Malone Studio, based in Portsmouth, specializes in the creation and restoration of stained glass, a craft that combines artistry and architectural precision. The studio is run by Tom and Priscilla Malone, where Priscilla focuses on the artistic design and glass selection, while Tom handles the fabrication of the windows. Their work encompasses both religious buildings and numerous secular properties and private residences in Newport, including historic homes on Bellevue Avenue and projects for Salve Regina University. They have also contributed to marine conservation efforts, repairing leaded glass windows for iconic vessels like the Coronet and Dorade through their collaboration with the International Yacht Restoration School (IRYS), an institution from which Tom is an alumnus. The process of creating or restoring a stained glass piece is likened to architecture by Tom Malone. It begins with Priscilla creating scale watercolor sketches based on the client's preferences and the home's existing style and color palette. These designs are then translated into full-size patterns, similar to dressmaking, which are used to cut the glass pieces. Small lead strips, known as 'came,' are then used to join the glass segments, and the intersections are soldered. The structure is then weatherproofed and strengthened using putty and cement. When undertaking restoration projects, a significant challenge is sourcing glass that seamlessly matches or complements the original piece, a task aided by Malone Studio's extensive collection of remnant glass from past projects and acquisitions from other studios. Stained and leaded glass is increasingly being incorporated into home design for both aesthetic and practical reasons. In areas like Newport, where houses may be close together, these windows offer a solution for privacy while still allowing natural light to enter. Homeowners are installing them in various locations, including dining rooms and kitchens, particularly in transoms, to create vibrant light effects. They are also popular choices for front entryways, either inlaid in doors or as sidelights, enhancing a home's curb appeal. The Malones initiate each new project with a home visit to understand the client's vision and assess the home's overall aesthetic. Clients vary in their involvement, with some having clear design preferences and others granting Priscilla creative freedom. Occasionally, clients bring antique stained glass pieces they wish to update to fit their current decor. Once a design is approved, glass samples are presented to the clients to demonstrate how the colors will appear in their specific environment, considering factors like the natural background (e.g., trees or ocean) that can influence the glass's perceived tint. Regardless of the project's specifics, stained glass offers a distinctive way to introduce light and decorative flair to any home. #StainedGlass #HomeDesign #GlassArtistry #WindowRestoration #NewportHomes #ArchitecturalGlass #HistoricPreservation #CustomGlasswork #StainedGlass #HomeDesign #GlassArtistry #WindowRestoration #NewportHomes #ArchitecturalGlass #HistoricPreservation #CustomGlasswork
