Step Inside a Zen Modernist Home That Brims with Art and Design

Lisa Perry, a designer and curator, has transformed Onna House, a Zen modernist home on Long Island’s East End, into a unique art and design destination. Originally built in 1962 for Pop Art collectors Robert and Ethel Scull by architect Paul Lester Wiener, Onna House is now a space dedicated to showcasing works by female artists and designers. Perry, in collaboration with Brooklyn-based practice Harper Design + Build, has meticulously redesigned the home, filling it with pieces from her personal collection, which includes a multimedia book installation by Julie Wolfe, an ebonized ash and cast metal table by Kelly Behun, and geometry-patterned glazed ceramics by Sabra Moon Elliot. Beginning May 28, Onna House will be open to the public by appointment, offering an intimate, gallery-like experience within a residential setting. Perry emphasizes that the artworks are not for sale, highlighting her commitment to collecting and supporting these artists. Her vision extends beyond a traditional gallery, aiming for Onna House to become a creative collective and studio where artists can reside, collaborate, and engage with the natural landscape. The home's bedrooms have been converted into communal spaces to facilitate this goal. The inaugural exhibition, "Listening to the Thread," running through June 25, features dreamy woven tapestries by Kyoto-bred Mitsuko Asakura, alongside jewelry, mirrors, and contemplative paper dresses by multidisciplinary Geneva artist Ligia Dias. Fabienne Stephan of Salon 94, who introduced Perry to Asakura, notes Perry's long-standing appreciation for both emerging and established female artists and believes she is well-suited for this curatorial undertaking. Perry's unconventional approach to Onna House is deeply rooted in her own upbringing. She grew up in a modernist home designed by George Frederick Keck, an architect influenced by Bauhaus and Japanese aesthetics, which bore an "eerie" resemblance to Onna House. This childhood experience, characterized by shoji screens and an open floor plan, informed her design choices for Onna House, including the revival of the primary bath with an open shower, a custom steel and marble vanity, and earthy shoji screens. Her parents' involvement in home textiles and their passion for art instilled in Perry a love for art and design, which she sees as continuing through Onna House. Furthermore, her family's political activism and feminist leanings resonate with the history of Onna House, which once hosted figures like Gloria Steinem and Betty Friedan. For Perry, Onna House is more than just an exhibition space; it embodies her cultural heritage, personal values, and dedication to showcasing female talent. #OnnaHouse #LisaPerry #ZenModernist #ArtAndDesign #FemaleArtists #PaulLesterWiener #HarperDesignBuild #Exhibition #LongIslandDesign #OnnaHouse #LisaPerry #ZenModernist #ArtAndDesign #FemaleArtists #PaulLesterWiener #HarperDesignBuild #Exhibition #LongIslandDesign
